I know there are a number of stereo and speaker upgrade threads already, but rather than get lost in one ot those I thought I'd start this thread. I wanted to improve the sound of the front speakers keeping the factory head unit and didn't want an external amp or sub woofer. I listened to several 6x9 direct replacment speakers at a local independent stereo shop and decided on a pair of JBL GTO 939 speakers.

They sound great. Good bass, nice mids and clear crisp highs. Sure I could have spent a couple grand for a complete system revamp but for less than $200 installed it was money well spent.

Crutchfield says these don't fit 2016 Tacoma - too high mounting height. Did they drop right in or did you need some adapter or mods? Look like good speakers.

    Thanks.

The installer physically cut out the original speaker from the spacer surround to use it with the new speakers. They could have used their generic spacers but the holes to mount it on to the door wouldn't match up. They said cutting the speaker out and using the factory spacer is the way they usually do it on a Tacoma. Likely that's why Crutchfield says they won't fit. Without the factory spacer the speakers would be too deep. The factory spacer is actually part of the speaker frame, that's why the speaker needs to be actually cut out.

As I expected the stock speaker had a magnet about the size of the end of your thumb and a paper cone. What a shame Toyota goes so cheap.

I just spent $1,063 and used the Rockford amp from my '12 in the new truck... new kicker speakers all around and a 10" sub behind the passenger rear... tuned and installed professionally, it'll make your ears bleed. Very happy.

Did you use the stock head unit?
