For no particular reason I want to get a dash cam. Seems like a prudent thing to have given all the wackos out there on the road. What works best for the Tacoma and how did you mount it, power it, etc. Do they still work in the extreme heat, extreme cold, etc? Thanks in advance!

The G1w-CB is 60$ on Amazon. It has a capacitor in place of the battery. The batteries in these eventually fail due to cycling and heat.

    http://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-G1W-CB-Capacitor-Dashboard/dp/B00P8F3LD0/ref=pd_sim_107_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41jiRifcioL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=1QH3V4SW9D1QJQP6FJ1H
    purchase this wiring kit:

    And this mount

    Fuse tap

And a 32GB sd card, not SanDisk brand, these don't play well with Sandisk, I dunno why
Wire to the acc fuse with a fusetap and a 3amp fuse. Lots of online support and forum chatter about this popular model.

I have cams front and rear

easy to install just tuck the wire into the headliner. YouTube videos show the process, I did it without even removing any thing like the a pillar or the kick panel.

I have the G1W and am quite happy with it. The battery is crap, but as long as you keep it plugged in it works great. Got mine for $40 on ebay.

I tapped the power at my jbl amp and used the same mount to above to attach the camera to the passenger side headrest. I had extra rubber band stuff from the mount I used on my rear view mirror. I plan to move the camera to the upper part of the window by using a 1/4-20 rivnut in the plastic molding at the top of the window/pillar for a better view. The same mount company on Amazon has a camera attachment that threads 1/4 20 it's the common camera thread.

The GW1 -C has a capacitor in place of a battery , the batteries in the regular ones dies after a while and starts recording corrupt files that can't be opened. This is because the camera shut off before closing the file . They sell the capacitor separately to upgrade your existing battery model fyi

One disadvantage to the capacitor models is they may stop recording after a crash disables your electrical system, another solution is to replace t h e batteries every few months, they are 7$

I think a standalone dashcam is better, it comes on by itself you forget it's there, mountain ting your phone each time you get in your car seems like an annoyance, and I use min e for its GPS capabilities. Plus my memory is pretty stacked with apps etc.

Plus they are just a hell of a lot of fun. I love reviewing footage when my wife drives the truck. I can see if she parked too close to anyone. Plus, you can review the recording when your truck is in the shop. With the windows down you can pick up clear audio outside. I run this setup for front and rear

So far, it's been very reliable

Picked up a pair of Transcend DP-100's for the Taco and FJ last Winter. Pretty happy with them and no issues so far.

I just installed one one these yesterday and I really like it. I did a lot of research at the dashcamtalk forum. It has loads of info on just about all dashcams. You might want to check it out to find the best one that would suit your needs. It worked for me.

I use a mobius c-lens with a capacitor because I wanted something more inconspicuous (it has no screens). Day video is pretty good, night is okay, but I'm sure there are better cameras in that regard out by now. Only issue is that I have to make sure it turns on; most of the time I remember to turn the key from 'off' quickly to 'start' and there isn't an issue, but if I pause on 'acc' or 'on' the unit will fully boot, only to shut itself off when accessory power cuts out during engine cranking. Then I have to tap the first button to make it power up again. If I wire a capacitor behind a diode into the 12v lead going into the power adapter maybe I could correct that...
