I attempted to use my rear diff lock today for the first time (to make sure it works) and it engages no problem (at least the dash tells me so), but when I disengage it, it stays engaged until I drive a few feet and then I hear a "pop". If I try to engage it after that, I have to drive another few feets until it engages. Is this correct operation? Thanks.

Thats how mine usually works. I think even in the manual it says that you may have to drive (or spin your wheels) for it to engage. Don't quote me there I'll have to check later.

Sorry to jack the thread a little but I have a 96 and haven't experienced any of the things you described. But, does my 96 have a dash light for the locker? Ive never seen one

Do you have a locker? Only TRD Tacomas came with them, and I don't think it was an option until 1997. There's a button to the left of your steering wheel that says 'RR Diff lock'

Completely normal. It always takes a few feet of driving to engage/disengage the locker because the gears have to be lined up right. Sometimes turning your wheel side to side helps.

Are you in 4lo? Locker can only be activated while in 4lo

Yeah. Ive only used it in 4lo. Also it doesn't seem to work. The two back wheels definitely don't always spin together. Does a normal locker allow one wheel to ever spin more than the other?

Yeah something's not right then. Sounds like it's not turning on at all, I bet it's something to do with the wiring connection. Likely an easy fix but I have no experience with it, I'm sure someone else will chime in. Or better yet, make a thread about it with it in the title doit gets more attention.

Going in and out of 4WD usually has a thunk sound and feel... may take a few feet of driving to accomplish as well. Using the rear locker has sometimes been an issue to get the light to go from blinking to solid. I found that turning the wheel full left or right and rolling a few feet does the trick. No thunk noise, maybe just a click sound.
