I am having the same experience w about 600 miles on the truck. In fact I started a thread about the same day as you about it. I definitely think that all the gears need to mesh correctly in order for the "shift by wire" to go into 4L. Its funny I reread the manual several times. I usually have to pump the clutch, roll and try several times before it goes in. In and out of 4H is no problem.

To engage 4 lo, you need to be below 2 mph as stated by the owners manual.

I used the method of mine from page one 5 separate times today and it worked every time. If I tried anything besides exactly what I posted on page one it would not engage.

I'll try that tomorrow. I really want to get a correct feel for this. That beep beep beep is irritating.

This sequence worked well in both my 2.7l 2007 as well as my 2016. My first two toyotas I just pushed the lever over and up.:burnrubber:

I had this issue today while off roading. One thing that seemed to help the change was shifting from 1st to 2nd then back to neutral. It some how seemed to align everything and get it going. Rolling back and fourth doesn't work if your stuck. It was a little frustrating at the time, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one that has experienced this.

Even with just 600 miles on the truck the tranny seems smoother-so I agree the system just need to meld with use.

I've had mine in and out of 4lo a lot Since I've had my truck. Maybe that's why it works well with my above routine.

I have a manual transmission, engaged 4-lo quite a few times today (first time doing it in this vehicle). Needed to go in and out of it while stopped but definitely had no problems with it immediately switching in and out, with just clutch all the way in. Hopefully things get better for you guys.

I think stopped is the key. After all, 2mph like the manual states is pretty slow.

Also, one thing that I noticed is that with aftermarket(thicker) floor mats you may want to make sure that the clutch pedal is depressed completely as if you were starting the truck. I think this was my issues the other day, I just got in the truck and shifted back and forth from 2hi to 4lo a few times with engaging and disengaging the locker. As long as I had the clutch pedal depressed a little harder then normal, as if I was starting the truck, it seemed to do just fine.

Thanks guys for all the feedback.

I've been wheeling every weekend for 6 months at least once a week. This weekend was the only exception.

I will try the double clutching with the clutch depressed like I'm starting the truck. My issue actually could be clutch pedal related since I really just recently started with this issue. I haven't checked my clutch fluid level but I've noticed my clutch engagement point is a bit lower than what it used to be as I've noticed I need to really depress the pedal all the way at start up or the truck won't start.. maybe the same with the 4WD-Lo engagement as well.

Yes it is, push it to the floor. There's a sensor behind the clutch pedal that needs to be pressed so you can start your truck or engage 4lo.

this seemed to be my issue. If you have floor mats, you may need to trim them or push harder.

I have adjusted my seating position and am mindful to depress the clutch completely to the floor. It is working well now. I just don't think I was going far enough with the clutch.
