Crappy Lift Kit I want to remove.
My aging (285k) PreRunner may need an upgrade soon, and I'm thinking about swapping in a 5VZ for the original 3RZ. Can a 5VZ bolt up to the A340F trans I think is in my truck already? And if it will, can it increase my towing ability to tow a car trailer with a trailer and car load of under 5000 lbs? How do I check what trans I have?

    Thanks, folks!

If you have an auto, then yes, it's an A340. I believe the E means 2wd, and F means 4wd.

I am pretty sure you will need at minimum the 3.4s bell housing and probably the torque converter.

Also, I'm betting there are a few internal differences such as clutch count and valve body details.

The v6 has 190 hp and just over 200ft lbs I believe. The 2.7 has 155hp and 177ft lbs. So you will gain a little extra grunt to tow with, but you will still have the same brakes, so stopping will not be any better. I'm my opinion, stopping is way more important that going. :)

Other details you should consider is wiring, fuel filter locations, and transmission cross member locations. I know that when I did my auto to manual swap, my transmission cross member was in a different location than the v6 guys. The 4cyl is a longer engine than the v6. It might be a non issue, but it's something to consider. .

Great info! The more I think about it, I'd be better off just shopping for a truck with fewer miles and a good tow package. Thanks for your help.
