I went ahead and mounted the rack on my ARE MX1 shell. I don't have the measurements at this moment, but will record them and post later. It was a slightly tedious task. I did a lot of measuring in hopes i wouldn't screw up.

FYI- I found that the original bolts need to be replaced with longer ones, and you might have to do a little extra work to make a good seal where you've mounted the rack.

So far I have used it for kayaks at least a dozen times over the summer and it's worked great. I've got lots of compliments on the look of the rack too. Was proud of that considering the price i paid.

500 lb max load is kind of misleading.

The max load for your shell will be less than half of that unless you have a reinforced roof model.

I thought all reinforced models came with racks from the factory?

    Kinda what I'm getting at.

Hopefully you're right about the roof reinforcment for your shell model. I have Thule racks on mine, thanks for the link to these racks, that's a hell of a price. $150 is significantly cheaper!

it is. I've hung all over them mounting yaks up down and have had no problems and I weigh about 230. That's probably the most force or weight they will see.

wife found this though Amazon and managed to pay 89$ for it. don't even know how...maybe it was something for opening an amazon card? paid 250$ for the shell (used)...would love thule but this worked better for my wallet at the time.

    WOW.

$350 for the pair is awesome! I paid $750 for my shell (SnugTop XV) used with Thule racks and bars installed, which IIRC, was just a couple hundred dollars more than the value of the rack/bars.

    I'm super jealous!

It may make you feel better to know it was a Speedway Blue topper, and I have super white DCSB. That's pretty stark contrast. Because I didn't want to drop whatever the cost of a real paintjob, I taped it up and plastidipped it black. It looks very utilitarian, and some folks have said it'sBA. A year later and the dip has faded a little. Honestly though, the dip has kept me from ruining the original paint of the topper. Straps and all the abuse of getting stuff on and off. Really pleased considering the cost. However, that part of the truck won't win any beauty contest. Not real worried about that.

Awesome. thanks for posting. I don't think my shell is reinforced, but I don't need more than 250lbs up there anyways. BTW is the top of your shell curved at all? I've heard of several people having to get wedged rubber gaskets to accommodate the curved roof with the flat rack base. I've also heard of others needing longer bolts

I have the J1000 racks on my topper. They're set 48" apart. In retrospect, I should have done them more like 44" apart, because they're just slightly too far apart for most baskets to easily mount.

Glad I saw your post. I hadn't seen the J1000 model, and I need a lower profile than the M1000:thumbsup:

The low profile is the reason I went for those. I need to avoid making my truck too tall so I can still fit in parking garages.

Do you know if your shell reinforced? Looks similar to mine, which is not reinforced. Curious because the picture showing your rig fully loaded looks like it potentially has a lot of weight up there. I don't plan of having much up there, just good to know what people are getting away with

I don't think it's the reinforced version, but the topper handled the load just fine. It's a big box in the pic, but it wasn't particularly heavy (maybe 150 pounds, if that). Personally, I wouldn't want to put more than around 200 pounds up there.

bumping this thread. Anyone have closer pics of the J1000 or the M1000? @T4RFTMFW @Capt. Obvious

Ill be putting one of these racks on a contractor cap, and then mounting my RTT to that. The RTT is 105lbs and I am around 220.

Looking to buy within the next day
