I have a 2016 Taco, 3,500 miles w/ tow package. I went in for service the first time, and they could not find an issue. I called the Toyota Corporate office and filed a complaint. They opened a case file on my truck. They have kept in constant contact with myself and the dealer. They had me go in yesterday, and take a test drive with the service manager. The truck was warmed up by them, and the problem would not duplicate. I asked if they could keep the truck over night, test drive it when it was cold, and also check the tranny fluid. They agreed, and gave me a loaner car. They said the issue didn't show up when they test drove it first thing in a.m., but that the tranny fluid was a quart low, so they topped it off. Since doing that, it stopped idling high, lunging when going from park to drive/reserve, and no longer searches for gears. Seems to be accelerating at a normal pace now when going down the road. Can any mechanics out there tell me if low tranny fluid can cause irreversible damage to the transmission down the road? I do mainly in town driving. Thanks to everyone who provided me with their input about my problem. The forum is a valuable resource!

    Thank you Bree for sharing

I like how they said "idle speed is typical for this engine..."

I caught that too. They're tricky with their wording!

1 qt low on a system that holds as much as this does would not seem as though it would cause major damage. However, it also would not seem that only a quart low would cause the issues it does, but obviously it has cured many problems just by adding one to two quarts. At this time it will be hard to tell. You could always press the issue for a free extended warranty on the tranny, some members have had some luck in doing so. @gearcruncher has some good info, you could check some of his threads.

OP, sorry you are having trouble with your engine idling and the erratic shifting.

I read your invoice in the pic. Were they able to check the installation of the driver's side mat? That must be pretty important.
(sarcasm) I wonder if that is causing the idle problems?
