Backup Camera Recommendations

My '96 has a cap with no side windows. So I'm finally shopping for a backup camera.
The unit I'm considering is the type that replaces the plastic frame that clamps the license plate to the bumper. The camera has a 170 degree horizontal viewing angle but I'm not sure if that's useful since the frame is recessed quite a bit from the rear surface of the bumper.

I've seen tailgate handle cameras but they're only made for newer models.

Any recommendations on camera models and mount location? Thanks.

Maybe they bend the truth on the exact angle. The license plate on my 2003 bumper is recessed too.
This should give you an idea of what it looks like. This was on my old single DIN radio (now have a double din with a much larger screen). No bumper getting in the way as you can see.

But the main thing is that the bumper won't intrude on the sides of the image from a camera mounted on the license plate frame.

 

BTW mtucker, where did you buy your double DIN dash install kit? I assume it would for my '96 as well?

 

My truck came with a double DIN Factory CD player. I bought a kit for my single DIN radio that basically just included the pocket to take up space for my single DIN radio. When I installed my double din radio with camera input, the metal brackets that were for the factory radio lined up fine for the double din radio so I didn't need any adapters or face plates. You might try punching your vehicle information into Crutchfield and see what they say you need if anything.

 

Bass, I was looking on CrutchField.com and found a dash kit (free with purchase). They will give you many options on different categories one being "car audio" then sub-categories such as amps, subwoofers, and receivers. They will even tell you if its fits or needs mod. I haven't purchased yet but I learned a lot more about what kind of upgrades I want to do with my audio setup. Although it has been a year since your last post. Did you upgrade it?
