I have a 2004 Tacoma xcab with the 2.7 with 5 speed. When I'm in 5th cruising down the highway there is a high pitched whine coming from somewhere, sounds like intake to me but from reading on here it could be input shaft on trans, which is normal I'm told.

Just want to clarify when I let off the gas on the highway it goes away, only when I push back on the gas pedal does it come back. I drive 120+ miles everyday for work and listening to this when I'm on the highway gets annoying.

Anyone else experience this on their Tacoma?

Manual trans? Could be a throwout bearing going bad or the flywheel. They tend to whine or tick when they're going bad, does it go away when you push in the clutch?

I'm dealing with something similar (likely throwout bearing) except mines a ticking sound that goes away when I push my clutch in.

My 2.7l manual tranny whines in every gear but 4th, its pretty quiet and has always done it so no worries from me.

Miles and last time the trans fluid was changed, and what's in it?

My old 2.7 5 speed whined in 5th gear pretty much from the day I bought it.

Drive it like you stole it and worry when it breaks.

That's kinda how I deal with this particular transmission and transfer case combo, they are so cheap locally I don't worry too much, just do the normal maintenance.

108k on it now. Fresh synthetic 75w90 gl4.

    Did it before as well

The howling with clutch out in neutral idling is there as well, doesn't bother me much.

I am told 4th is a 1:1 and doesn't whine in this gear. It's not bad in 5th just annoying after an hour on the highway.

A lot of my driving is at 50-60 mph and it isn't as noticeable at these speeds. 70-80 mph on highway it is however.
