Regarding the arguments, HOLY WHORES Batman, there were MANY excellent points made! I am NOT familiar with MURS only because I just dabble within my license parameters!!! Until "I" decide to conquer "NEW grounds" as far as the next higher license or other freq, I typically just stay put! One thing I will point out that someone had mentioned in that thread\arguement and I personally have said it myself on this thread and possibly others, it is HIGHLY ADVANTAGEOUS to have BOTH CB & HAM!!! BUT, when I mean "HAM", I mean with a license so as repeaters can be utilized!!! I can hit the repeater near Big Bear from Huntington Beach without issue only using about 3-5W max TX power!!!!!!!!! For trail runs, yes, I agree you don't need range like that, but also think about it like this, when people are trying to "meet-up" just before a trail run, instead of texting, just pick up your HAM radio that is "linked" to a repeater site and you have real-time voice\data, if you get my meaning! No typing of texts while driving, waiting for text replies, etc etc etc!!!

I do have to disagree with "type radio" use! YES, that is a true statement, however, just because the Baofeng has it does NOT mean that you can use it!!! That "I" know of, the Baofeng is a HAM type radio ONLY!!! PERIOD!!! So commercial band use is out of the question!!! When out in the mountains on SIMPLEX (i.e. radio-to-radio communications without any repeater involved), I HIGHLY DOUBT you will interfere one others radio TX???!!! Out of the handhelds, you will get 3-4mi, at best!!! That is about it!!! You MAY get somewhat farther range, but not that much more! Without going into details about "knife edging, low freq vs high freq TX'ing distance, obstacles affecting TX'ing range, etc etc etc" all I will say, get both a CB setup and HAM and the GMRS\FRS radios. Just know that you really SHOULD get a HAM license instead of off-banding!!!

The FRS frequencies are considered "FREE", if you will!!! But now it begs the wonder of, should we be using them on "non-typed" FRS radios (i.e. the Baofeng is NOT an FRS "approved" typed radio)???!!!

 

Ryan, is it possible to post a picture of the radios in question? I MIGHT be able to help answer your question?

Btw, I also want to add that "typed radio" is soooo F'N retarded of a "law\restriction"???!!! That's like saying killing someone with a knife is not the same as with a gun???!!! Uhhhh, dumba$$ people who make-up the laws, it is still the same end goal, in this case, someone got killed regardless???!!! BUT, THEN you have the, I might add, SMALL Wattage output power restrictions, which, to some degree I get and understand, but when you're talking about something that can only "legally" TX 0.5-1W max and then you are saying that another device and\or "typed radio" can only TX 1-4W max, is pretty F'N lame and senseless!!! Those are such SMALL Wattage outputs it's ridiculous to even worry about!!! Just my humble opinion on the matter.

The statement about not requiring a license because of low frequency is NOT true and\even low power for that matter!!! A lot of the licensing is based off of "type of radio" (i.e. there is a such thing as a typed category), freq, wattage output, etc etc etc!!! A simple HAM technician license opens up a WIDE range of freq that you can TX on, but at the same time, certain freq spectrums are limited to even a technician class licensed individual until you get a higher classed license, then that restriction is lifted to some degree if not completely!!!

 

Those look like GMRS\FRS radios? Do you have a Baofeng radio by chance?

 

I'm not sure what kind they are, a friend of mine gave them to me when he got newer ones. I'll have to ask, but I'll pick up a Baofeng off of Amazon...looks like I can pick one up for $30

 

Set the yellow radios to Ch8 and punch the freq of 467.560 into your Baofeng and try to TX to one another?

I imagine that if you press the MENU button on the yellow radios the number will flash. That should\might be the channel it is currently on! Press he UP\DOWN buttons until you see the number "8", then press the PTT. This might work? I have Midlands, so the menu structure might be different??? BUT, the few channel assignment should be standard

 

So, not too sound dumb or anything...

All of this still confuses me. I clearly need to become more educated and get the license.

Your opinion is that I do not use the boefang radio I purchased tomorrow to communicate in anyway other than listening?

And listening should only be done on certain frequencies?

First, that isn't "dumb" and I don't judge people like that!!! My philosophy is that if a person doesn't know, then they don't know! So, to answer, you can listen ALL YOU WANT, but, technically, you should NOT TX without a license because IF caught, it is NOT a pretty sight!!! The chances of being is VERY, VERY LOW!!! Regarding certain freq, you are NOT allowed to transmit certain freq for a particular class. For example, you are allowed to TX on 10m but only certain freq ON 10m until you get the next highest class license!!!

With all that said, I can't and won't stop someone TX'ing without a license, I just don't particularly agree with it and\or even off-banding!

 

I won't be there and me trying to go to these meets is near impossible!!! I help my sister take care of our mom!!! Even more so on the weekends, since the weekdays I am typically back home in Huntington Beach instead of La Puente!

Still sounds somewhat foreign to me. Don't know what 10m is or off-banding.

Think I'll still have a clear conscience if I were to communicate a little tomorrow.

On a positive note. I've found out where and when I can test to get the technicians license.
Going to begin studying up so I can at least follow along in conversation and most importantly, understand the parameters that I should be operating the radio in.

Good start or playing with fire? I should keep it set at the 1 watt setting? It only offers 1, 5, and 7 watt power selections.
