Water pumps

So how long can I hope to go before my water pump dies on my 4.0?

I'm at 81k and so far..... Mines hanging in there.

 

It depends on how well you maintain your cooling system, if it gets over heated. Then there is the luck part. It should last a good long time.

I am still on factory fill Anti-Freeze.
I really need to drain an refill.
But.... well... I have no excuse. Laziness I suppose.

 

I was just wondering if they last 100K and fail shortly after or they last a lot longer on average

 

My 05 is sitting at 120k miles and I've never had a problem with coolant leaking or over heating. I have the pink super long life Toyota coolant and it's been flushed twice. Once I paid for at about 65k and the next when my frame was replaced at about 107k. If mine ever goes bad I'll use that as an excuse to go hog wild and replace my valve cover gaskets and timing chain cover.

 

Its one of those things that varies greatly from vehicle to vehicle, so its hard to give an estimate.

 

Is there a specific reason you're worried about your water pump?

I also have original hoses, been flushed per manual with OEM fluid still going

others will say change pump when you are changing timing belt (every 60,000) as it will certainly fail before then

also note these pump have weep holes

you could see pink coolant weep or spots and that is normal

pink stalactites like seen in the pic on these forums are not normal. pink spots around
the engine bay but not excessive and doesn't last for more than a few runs is normal

so some have seen that weep and think 'pump bad' immediately and it might not be,
it's designed to allow small grit to work it's way out, and while debris under the O-ring
for however many hours you could see pink coolant weep or spots and that is normal as long
as it eventually stops

 

I just had my framed replaced and while apart, the tech showed me the "weep" spots and suggested I get the water pump done. At 96,000 miles and 11 years old, they talked me into in. Hope they didn't bs me!

 

I have about 96K now and wondered if a water pump was in the near future. Back in the old days they would die around 100K miles.

 

I'm at 94000 miles. Still going strong. Hate to admit it, original coolant, hoses and belts. Yep, living on the edge.
