I've done it. It's not as hard or as expensive as all the people that haven't done it will say. You will have to be able to do a lot of the work yourself to make it worthwhile. The hardest part it swapping the transmission. For some people that is difficult, for others it's just a normal Saturday. PM me if you need some info.

Sounds like you still have a bit of research to do, but here are the basics.

You need the transmission and transmission mount from a 4x4 (make sure the tailhousing is included). You also need the front and rear driveshafts. You can modify your rear driveshaft but it's easier to just get the driveshaft from a 4x4 truck of the same cab config as your truck. You also need the front diff (including all mounts brackets and hardware), CV axles, and 4x4 hubs. Finally, you need the transfer case from an FJ cruiser. This is the j-shift version so you dont have to deal with all the electronics. You'll have to cut a hole in your floor for the shifter to come up through. You'll also need to cut and modify your transmission cross member.

    nothing cool
Is super easy. All you do is drive it to your dealership and they'll take your truck. Then they'll give you a different truck that with 4x4. And all you have to do is sign some papers and open your bank account.

But seriously besides fluid changes I have no mechanical skills. So it sounds like a lot of work. Impressive work @jowybyo

Agree with this. Even if you did the conversion, your VIN will still be a 4x2 with less value.
