    Hello to all,

My step uncle's daughter has a 1995 Tacoma with the 3.4, 5 speed manual 4x4 and nearly 200k miles that was diagnosed with 100% leak down on cylinder #4 which lead us to believe the head gasket went or the head was cracked due to overheating before the diagnosis. My cousin tore down the motor, but we didn't find any coolant in cylinder 4 or any obvious signs of a blown HG or cracked head (no visible breaches in the HG material). Long story short, the motor looked like it didn't get enough oil changes and had visible scoring on the cam bearings and cam journals. Now we are going to be looking for a low mileage replacement engine. My main questions to anyone who has ever done the swap is, #1 how hard is it to swap over from auto trans to manual trans on a used 5VZ, #2 are there any years that are difficult to swap into a 1995, and #3 is there anything else other than the obvious to look for when finding a used engine. I plan to run the used engine before purchase and if possible, pull one of the valve covers to look for any sludge and I just want to make sure that I'm not overlooking anything. Thanks everyone!

I swapped a 04 motor in my 97...the 04 was auto and mines a manual. Worked GREAT!

Nice! Did you use the 1997 ecu on the 04 engine? Any other stuff to watch out for when converting from auto to manual? This is my first engine swap and want to make sure I got all of my info.

I used my 97 ecu and wire harness. Make sure it has a pilot bearing hole in the back. Also you have to use your throttle body and ac conpressor. That's pretty much it man. Really easy!

Let me know if you have any more questions. Some have reported the injectors out of a new one are different but it worked great for me!

Thanks man. Why did you replace the original 3.4 in your truck?

It had 250k. Every seal leaked and I wanted to supercharge it
