Sounds good. I was worried that the tips could get to wiggling pretty bad and snap off. Apparently not a problem.

i put my 11' plus rods on my roof and never had an issue with 200+ mile trips exceeding 70mph. i also put stands under the snowboard rack to gain reel clearance. but i dont have anything over 9' that has less than 1oz lure weight. i know my 8 and bait heaver isnt going to flex on the roof enough to do any damage.

I just keep my rods in the boat. But if I surf fished that would be awesome!

This is actually my first post on TW. Brand new to this. Just got my taco less than a month ago.
    Here is my Setup:
    IMG_2436.jpg
    IMG_2438.jpg

I could not find any rod holders online that are at a 45 degree angle that would mount to my toolbox so i decided to make one myself (also because all of the rod holders are way overpriced). It isnt perfect but for the price it was a great build.

    Materials (around $30-35 total):

    Yard of aluminum (or steel)
    5' pvc pipe 1 1/4"
    (2) 45 degree angle plates (usually for building stuff with two by fours and whatnot)
1 box of self tapping screws
Can of black spray paint (that bonds to plastic)

    How to:
Cut the PVC into 10" pieces (make sure that will fit with your toolbox deapth). I did 5 pieces but you could do more or less. Measure and mark where you want your PVC holders to be on the aluminum strip. Attach the 45 degree angle plates into both ends of the aluminum strip using the self tapping screws. Mark and drill 2 holes in near the center of each piece of PVC big enough for your self tapping screw and drill bit to fit into. Screw the 10" pvc pieces to the aluminum strip that you marked. You will use the holes you already made so that you can put the screw in from the inside of the pipe. This way the screw tip should poke out of the aluminum strip. Use an angle grinder to cut off the poking out screw tips if needed. At this point all that is left is the paint. You can either leave it how it is, Paint it all black, or tape off the aluminum and just paint the PVC black (what I did). Apply at least 2 coats of paint. Then just use some of your leftover self tapping screws to secure it to the bottom of your toolbox.

Sorry if the instructions are a little rough. I hope yall can figure it out.

Let me know if anyone decides to do something similar to this. Looks great with the rods in the back. Sorry I dont have a picture of it. Ill get around to it.

I set some radio stations. That's about it so far.
I finally had a string of slightly dry weather moments in PDX and finished my rod holder project. I wanted to use a bar system that would allow me to use some Yakima stuff. Plenty of ready made things out there, but I thought it made sense to be able to angle the brackets so I could get the longer salmon rod tips up a little higher (context is important when reading this). The brackets flip either way, so the bars can be above or below the bed rails. The side plates are 3/16" steel and the bars are 1" tube with .120 wall thickness. Pretty stout.

Are those ski carriers? Do the rods move laterally at all?

I like it a lot, never thought of using ski carriers.

Ski racks are actually great for rods. They clamp down pretty good and don't cause any damage so there's no movement. I'll be taking my Yakimas off the CRV once I get roof racks on the truck.

Also, I came up with this last weekend for the bed. Took a premade rack I built for a different vehicle and mounted it to a treated 2x6 that sits in the little notches in the bed and I have it secured with turnbuckles to the tie downs.

Thanks. I have seen them listed for sale as snowboard/fishing rod holders. They seem to fit the rods snugly.

I may ultimately figure out a way to use tubes at the reel end of the rods. I've seen a thread here on TW that uses tubes and that setup allows locking the reels in for better security.

I got a buddy that lives in NY that had a rack that locks the reels and rods. I always worry about someone lifting my stuff and most of my stuff is custom so it's not easy/cheap to replace.

    This is what he had

Built this for my freshwater rods. Pretty simple, piece of decking wood and pvc pipe with a 22.5 degree angle at the bottom. Rigged up some threaded rod to put through the cleats on the rail to keep pressure down on it, doesnt move around at all. Next im gonna make something for my surf fishing rods, havent thought about what i want to do for them yet.

Thought a little outside the box and used the screws in the tailgate to mount a thingy for my Yakima rack. Haven't welded in over 5yrs and did it half way blind, but a grinder goes a long ways. Only thing I see being an issue is the factory screws screw into plastic so I need to figure out a way to get a couple washers and a bolts in there. But here's what I got for so far. The rods are 13' so I have about 7ish feet sticking out the bed and the tips are about 8' off the ground so it'll clear most trees and I don't have to worry about someone running into them from behind. I plan on neatening it up and painting it this weekend weather permitting.

    IMG_5182.jpg
    IMG_5183.jpg

    Edit...

Prettied up the welds and added a few extras, but most importantly, I made it removable for when I go camping with my bed tent. I took out the factory screws and the plastic piece they screw into. I got two 2"x5/16" SS bolts (3/8" may work, but I recommend 5/16") and put them in the opposite direction (pain in the ass with larger hands, but doable). A couple washers on the back side and a washer, lock washer and a nut on the visible side to keep it in place. I plan on keeping the wing nuts on with a 5/16" washer and a 5/16" lock washer when the "rack" is removed. And with the "rack" on, I have a 5/16" washer then the "rack" then a 5/16" washer then a 5/16" lock washer and then a wing nut. I'm sorry if this is confusing, I'm not great at write ups. Here are some pictures, I can post more if need be.

i dig those setups but thats a lot of gear 9' out the back of your rig. thats just my 2 cents. i see the guys with the hitch mount cooler racks ose the rocket launchers with 12'ers hanging out of them it makes their truck 20' long.

if it works, it works. i cant hang 600$ out the back like that.

I appreciate your opinion and I agree 100%, it's temporary though until I'm able to afford a roof rack. my other vehicle is set up nicely for my drum rods up top and cobia and trout stuff on the inside. I'll eventually have a similar set up with the truck, but until then, the CRV will be the go to fishing-mobile. Honestly, I'll probably get tired of how the truck is set up come sometime in September/October/November when I'm chasing the drum and I'll put a roof rack on the credit card.
