Hi I have a 95 tacoma with a 2.7 and an automatic transmission that is currently knocking like theres no tomorrow, I was wondering if I could swap it out with a 3.4 liter without having to replace the tranny and how hard it would be to have it all rewired or if id be better off finding another 2.7 or rebuilding the current motor.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Pretty sure the transmissions are different between the two engines. Other than that with all the right parts I can't imagine it being too difficult to do. Be easier to get a complete parts truck and just swap everything over. The ECU, and motor mounts are probably all different but other than that it's probably a pretty easy swap. 1st gens were all very interchangeable which was nice.

I'm not positive, but I think the bell housing bolt patterns are different. And to swap, you need ecu and wiring harness as well.

@SilverGhost just did the swap. It's quite involved. Pretty well documented in his build.

The bell housings are different. The motor mounts need to be moved. The tachs arent compatible. I used a complete drivetrain and wire harness on my 3.4 swap.

Give a big thanks to Brett to tagging me. Before you consider the swap there will be fab work needed to do it. The motor perches on the frame are going to need to be moved. It is possible you might have to move the transmission cross member for the transmission too. I had to, but I also did a 4x4 converstion. But you won't know until you set the 3.4 in. Or find a guy here that has the same truck of yours with a 3.4 and ask him where is the cross member on his truck and compare it to yours. You might not need to move it. When you cut off the 2.7 perches you'll might also notice your frame is pushed in. So you'll have to address that too.
Now when it comes to the swap like the guy above said you'll also have to swap the bell housing from the engine to the transmission because of the starter on the engine is on the passenger side not the driver like the 2.7l.
Another thing is that I highly recommend staying within your year. But if you can't and need a motor from a newer truck. This is where doing your home work comes in. In 03-04 models the throttle body changes. Do not buy those years. You have to make sure the throttle body matches yours. Because if not then you'll be in my shoes and have to rewire the whole truck like I did.
Once you find the correct motor then you'll have to get an ECU and engine harness that is comparable with your transmission. If you are not an California truck make sure you get a non California ECU. Or find someone that is willing to flash the ECU for you. Because you'll have to deal with emissions that is programmed in the ECU. The best way to know is once you find and ECU get the vin and call Toyota and ask if the vin is under federal or Cali emissions.
You'll also need other things too. Like an air box, fan shroud. And other things. I have to go start work so good luck. Feel free to check out my build. Ask me any questions and I'll help in any way I could. See ya!

I'm new to this forum and I was wondering how hard it would be to swap over a 3.4 from a 98 4runner to a 03 tacoma prerunner?
