Anyone know if you can rebuild a sub? Apparently I popped my coil (according to a local "expert") but I'm not sure if that's correct. Symptoms are a static noise coming from oneach of the subs, still hits but almost seems like it is trying to play high frequency waves. Also upon pulling the sub I can feel a slight dragging when pressing on the cone surface itself

I've heard if the voice coil is bad its more cost effective to replace the sub. Check to make sure its just not the spider assembly that's torn or something.

How would I go about checking that? It's a great quality sub that has last me almost 8 years I'd hate to get rid of it

The spider assembly would be a visual inspection. Its the webbing that attaches from the coil/magnet area to the cone. The voice coil... no clue how to see if that's bad. Look for burnt-ness or anything funky maybe?

Everything looks identical to the operating sub. Visually they are the same. Only difference is now one drags slightly and crackles under load.

On a side note, they are ARC audio black series with a matching ARC fd 600.2 sub (I think that's the set up) anything that might be comparable if I need to replace?

You can get it reconed, basically the entire cone/surround/voicecoil/spider assembly is replaced. You can get a replacement and do it yourself for about $75. Check on caraudio forums. A local shop could do it as well, but I would only use someone that has definitely done it successfully before.

Some subs you can rebuild, others you can't. Typically the only subs that sell re-cone kits are subs made for SPL. Otherwise it's typically not worth it to rebuild unless you have a really expensive sub.

Define expensive. These were $350+ each. I think they are quality but not over the top. Considering just selling the amp and one good sub and getting a higher end sub. We'll see

I would recone both if your going to recone 1. The new recone will be way stiffer than the functional old one and they will seem out of phase. Or . Just get new stuff.

That's not too bad price wise for a good sub like ARC audio. I don't see anyone selling recone kits for ARC audio subs. But you could contact them and see how much a repair is or if they sell the recone kit and you can do that yourself.

Shipping might get you and not make it worth while. I had to ship my Orion HCCA 15" for repair and it was not cheap to ship. But it is also a 75lb sub.

    Good luck.

So talked to arc, no kits available and he politely told me I got my money's worth, but I'm free to see if a shop wants to attempt it. I'm fine with that.

So.....assuming the amp is still good, can I just hook up comparable subs (same rms, ohms etc) and walk away?

If you're dead set on rebuilding, you could try hitting up PSI Car Audio. Ive had a couple rebuilds done by them and gotten a few and done it myself. Mind you the subs I've rebuilt are SPL subs, but they may be able to do it for yours.

Yup, PSI can generally re-cone most subs as long as they have the coil in stock.
Depending what sub it is, may be worth just buying a new sub or sell the 2nd sub and buy a different series all together
