What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

New front pads and rotors went on today to help rid the truck of a steering wheel shimmy and brake fade.

Drivers caliper was missing the center retaining clip when I pulled it so time will tell if that was the source of the shaking

 

Got this today!

 

Got a little work done on my NSA fuse and relay box.

Hope I have time to finish it this weekend!

 

It was about 300 dollars for primer paint and clear. But a lot of time since I work too much. Still need to buff it out and put it back together. Will post pics of finish product soon

I would go for at least the 9K model. Don't they offer a 12K too? What bumper are you going to drop it in? If the 12K model will fit, that is the size to go with. I like the idea of more reserve.

edit: Also, as someone mentioned, get rid of the steel cable regardless of the winch you chose. Rope cost more but it wont kill you like the steel can.

For a fridge/freezer I hope.

 

How do you work the brake on that winch? I don't see the handle.

 

Correct, was in an indel b gb a while back bought the fridge and slide. Was too lazy to mount it up.

Having a fridge is such a nice option. I love not having to rely on ice.

 

That seems monumentally boring, your trips would end at a rutted logging road.

 

The key to wheeling is good friends. Every major disaster I've been apart of in the backwoods or on a trail, and trust me, I've been in a few. Never would have gotten out without teamwork from friends. Via others winches, tools, parts, or just brains to think of how to get out. You can never prepare for everything yourself. Period. But sharif the load, you'll be fine. I tell all my wheeling buddies, that no matter what it takes, I'll make sure they get home somehow if I'm with them. I'm all in 100%. What's mine is theirs. I'll be the first to grab a tool and get under someone's truck to fix it. How it is on the trail.

Cheap winches...eh..not a fan really. But you can usually disassemble cheap winches and make them better. So not always bad.

The freehwheel/engage lever is on the driver side, the cutout in the bumper, it's hidden but it's there.

 

Haven't decided on a bumper yet just have a good deal and want to get for future(hoping wife don't kill me) but I do like the Bambi one haven't looked around for a winch bumper as I wasn't going to get.one but I can get it for cheap so I figured why not I can save up for a bumper later on..

 

The Bambi Basher is a good, solid bumper and sports a drop-in design for a winch. It will easily accommodate larger winches, unlike most plate bumpers.

So f'ing true. That mentality of price=better is so out dated. And that the Chinese stuff is crap is the same attitude from WW2. But by all means please continue to waste your money on a $1000 light bar when a $100 will be just as good. And do tell us of the failure rates because you'll be wrong again. Couldn't agree more man. Is a Polo t-shirt for $50 better than a Walmart $5 shirt. YES, AT TIMES........things are worth the extra money. Is a Lamborghini gonna do anything better than a Geo tracker? It will still get me to Burger King and back. Had to chime in. Lol

 

I know I'm late to the party but I'll throw in. IIRC Off-Road Adventures torture tested a bunch of winches in their buyers guide, mustve been a couple of years ago now. They rated the winches from HF as a 5 star, best bang for your buck winch, rating it as the best tested. Several of the writers for the magazine said it tested far better than winches that were double its price. The brand I believe is Mile Marker. A friend and I were both very skeptical of the reviews. Some time later after his warn seized up, he bought one of these HF winches. We go wheeling constantly together. He's used the HF winch maybe two dozen times over the last 2 1/2 years or so and it has worked just as smooth as could be everytime. Half the Price and has already outlasted its Warn counterpart. Sometimes good deals aren't a rip-off just cause they dont have some flashy trumped up industry name that'll keep you next to the cool kids, sometimes they're just good deals. I say go for it. It's cheap insurance in sticky situations. FWIW i certainly do agree with everyone saying go to synthetic line, the pros over cable are getting too many to list!
