I have a 2008, access cab sport model 4.0 engine.
My problem is sometimes the truck won't start, it cranks but wil not start.
The dealer has checked out the complete starting system, immoblizxer system and ignition. The last time it wouldn't start I had it toed in. The problem when they went to check it out it started.
They also have checked the master keys to see it there was a problem in the key chip. The dealer is at a lose. They said they have checked out all they could in the current condition. They need the truck when it will not start. As far as codes go, the only code generated is a general type code when the truck does not start. Nothing specific. Mean while I have a truck that I am not sure when it will or will not start. Looking for any suggestions.

It sounds like you have a failing fuel pump or something fuel delivery related. Engine needs Spark, Air and Fuel to run, sounds like you got the first 2 covered.
When the fuel pump died in my truck @ around 135k it just died and didn't even show any symptoms.

Thanks Paul. Guess there is no way to check it out other than putting a pressure gauge on it.

Had a similar prob with my V8 4Runner. Had to take it back 3 times. Parts of the fuse box (backside) and other parts were corroding and causing an intermittent dead battery symptom. Since I couldn't afford a new wiring harness, the 2nd option was to have them clean out the fuse box and other corroded parts. Its fine now, but I don't trust the truck anymore. Gonna trade it in soon.

You have spark when it is occuring right? You have to ensure that you are getting proper spark and spec fuel pressure which is 39-41psi if I recall.. Similar to the othe others before my fuel pump just gave up at 49-52k miles. No warning.

I don't have that problem, that was all checked, in fact at one point they had my dash just about all out checking fuses, wiring, continunity, etc. I have the same problem not trusting the truck until I can find the problem. After what I have gone through so far even when the problem is solved it will take awhile to build confidence in the truck.

I might look into a fuel pressure gauge. I have a extra one in the garage, I just need to see what I need to hook it up. I'll need to cut the fuel line and put in a T connection that the gauge would thread into.

They are GM style quick disconnects. Probably designed by GM themselves seeing as they are in bed with Toyota these days. Check and see if parts stores sell a T style fitting which will allow you to adapt onto the quick disconnect, then you could check fuel pressure at the engine bay. If you are lucky it will be the fuel pump and this would be your chance to retrofit the weak stocker with a nice Walbro 255LPH, Aeromotive, or AEM 50-1200 greentop pump. I have had fantastic results with my greentop AEM since I installed it. I have full trust in knowing my truck will start everytime now.

Thanks Roberto, that is good advice. I'm going to look into the T-fitting. I'm leaning towards the fuel pump being the problem. I have spark and air, need to check for fuel.

Not sure if the 08 does this, but can you hear the fuel pump priming itself when you put the key in (but before you crank)?

On mine, it doesn't always happen but if I let the truck sit for more than a day, it'll cause the fuel pump to auto-prime once I put the key in. It's a distinct sound that only lasts maybe 5 seconds.

The other question would be -- Have you ever run the tank completely dry? I can't speak exactly about the Tacoma, but my understanding is that modern vehicles have the pump submerged in the fuel tank since it provides a cooling effect.

Plugs and everthing is good. The fuel pump and filter are in the tank. I have never run the tank below quarter tank. I will have to try and listen for the fuel pump. Right now the truck is in the body shop. The last time I had it flatbeded to the garage the driver decided to go through Long John Silver's and some how there was a sign or something sticking out and it swiped the side of the cab. Need to have the windows replaced on the passenger side and then the body work done and painted.

Truck ran for a week with no problems. Today after 6 or 8 times starting the truck the last time I went to start it it would not start. Same old problem, just keeps cranking. This time I got a code B2799. Looked it up and said it could be:
    < Faulty Key
    < Faulty transponder key amplifer
< Faulty transponder key ECU assembly
< Transponder key amplifer wire harness

Not sure what all that means, but I'm going to let it sit over night and if it does not start in the morning going to have it towed to the Toyota dealer.
This is the third time the truck would not start and each time it was on a Thursday. How weird is that!!!

Is there an aftermarket alarm system installed?

The next time it cranks but won't fire, try this out -- open the gas cap. Maybe something is getting choked out.

No aftermarket alarm system. Tried the gas cap a couple of times.
They just picked up the truck and takingf it to the dealer. Funny thing it would not start today either, called the tow company when they got here the truck still would not start. While I was talking to the driver tried it and it turned over. Started it a couple of more times, the driver was getting ready to leave and when I tried it again it would not start. So I had him tow it to the dealer. Hope it does not start when they try it.

Code indicates a problem with the immobilizer circuit. If dealer still can't replicate/fix, try swapping out your key, though it's probably the antenna that reads the key in your chip. They can be finicky.

Ya know it could also be electromagnetic interference. Got any big microwave transmitters nearby or radio equipment in your truck?

I have tried different keys. Sometimes the truck starts with any of the keys and other times when the truck won't start neither of the keys will work. I don't think it is the keys, antenna sounds like it could be a problem. The dealer just called, the truck is there, waiting to hear if it started when the try it. I hope they find something, this is getting frustrating.

The truck is at the dealer now. They can't get it to start. So now we will see if they can figure it out.
