Is the 5 Speed Manual still an issue?

    Hello,

I'm getting rid of my current vehicle due to transmission problems that appear to be never ending and have been looking into a 2016 Tacoma (most likely a 2.7 4x4). I see that there appear to be a lot of issues with the new 6 speed auto and so have been considering the 5 Speed Manual. I have searched and found that there have been issues with poor quality clutches with this model (due to a change to LUK clutches somewhere around 2008?) but haven't been able to determine if Toyota ever switched back to the higher quality clutches.

Can someone tell me if this is still an issue with these vehicles? If I have to replace the clutch with an aftermarket clutch somewhat early on it's not the end of the world but it would be nice to know what I'm getting into.

    Thanks.

I have a 2011 4 cyl. 5 spd Tacoma accesscab 4x4. My clutch started slipping at 13,460 miles this February. I pulled the transmission out, and found I had an LUK clutch, which I replaced with an Aisin unit. The LUK looked for all intents to be brand new, but apparently there was not enough clamping pressure to eliminate any slippage. The Aisin stock replacement from RockAuto cost me $180, and two days time, works like a charm. I don't know who the suppliers are for the 2016 builds, but if it happens after warranty, its not that difficult to swap out if you do it yourself.

I have a 2015 2.7 with the 5 speed, aside from kind of a "different" feel to the engagement zone, have had no problems with slipage or anything. Not quite 46,000 on her right now, and a fair amount of off-road use.

2010 here with 5 spd, original clutch no slippage.

Food for thought: You can buy alot of clutches for the cost of one automatic rebuild.
