Hi guys been shopping for a new truck and I love the new tacoma. Also looking at the colorado which is very nice too, but I really like the look of the interior and stance of the tacoma.

My chevy friends keep warning me about the lack of a boxed frame with the tacoma and prior issues with frame rust. Did toyota fix the issue with frame rust on the newer models and are my friends just over reacting?

Fixed for now. Haven't heard of anyone going in for a 3rd gen frame recall.

FWIW, Toyota used more high-strength steel and has a new frame treatment method for the 3rd gen Tacomas

It's too early to tell if it's fixed honestly. Wait about 3 winters and you'll see. Brand new 3rd gen frames were found with exposed metal on the frame welds that were missed by a botched coating process.

See this thread about my experience seeing a brand new 3rd gen with 6 miles on the odometer at a car show and the exposed metal on the frame welds:

I'm pretty sure the Colorado/Canyon don't have boxed frames either... for a mid size, not alot of needs for boxing in the frame. Full size yes...

C channel frame allows for flex, boxed adds rigidity. Neither is ultimately better than the other. If it's a work truck then you'd want boxed, if it's a hobbyist or daily driver truck then C is just fine. The hiliux is a boxed frame but it's a work truck, the taco is more of a daily driver/hobbyist vehicle.
