Here's the tranny from a suburban we are renting for an event:

    Wtf right?!

You'd think quality control would be a little better than that.

Wow. How/what made you look under there to find that??

Judging by how dirty the cast edges of the T-case is, I'd say it's been like that for a while.

Perhaps it was a dash light or the whale not wanting to move.

That just goes to show you the rental company doesn't inspect when you drop off the vehicle.

Looks like a transfer case and it looks like it took a hell of a hit.

    This^^

OP, I'd point that out to them on the return of the rental and tell them the dried oil has been there a while...... Otherwise they'll charge your CC to repair it, thinking YOU abused the vehicle.

One of the girls on our crew backed it out of a parking space, stopped, then got out of the "whale" and said it wouldn't move. I tried to drive it forward and felt major resistance from the driveline.. Got under it and saw the damage. Weirdly, this 'burban has less than 50,000mi on it. Not only that, but being the good boy that I am I got under the vehicle before we drove off the rental lot to check BJs and brakes and the tranny was in one piece. Unless another member of crew dropped this thing off a cliff I can't imagine how this happened other than a fault in the metal from manufacture finally failing due to fatigue.. You'd think quality control would catch that, right?

No doubt about it, that fucker was hit or high centered or something. That didn't just magically blow, they aren't ever under any real internal pressure. This isnt a GM problem, its a careless user.

I doubt every single transmission casting is x-rayed and blueprinted before going to assembly. Pretty common for castings to have porosity. Some fail, some don't. Not GMs fault. Probably a fluke deal. Someone hit something in the road.

Jokey thread title aside, I really don't see a scenario where this could happen other than from a brutal high centering or from fatigue finally catching up and causing a failure along a fault line. I would love to have been witness to the jackassery that caused this. I've never seen anything like it! haha

I'd say the last guy that rented it drove it like, well, a rental. Took it off some sweet jumps maybe.
