I have a 2005 access cab, 4 cyl, auto trans. I'm having a problem with the brakes. I just changed the front brakes, new slotted rotors , pads and hardware. Assembled all an bled the brakes front and rear with a solid pedal. Start the engine the pedal turns to mush. Drove it trying to seat the pads, no joy. The truck will stop but I can bottom out the pedal if I push hard. I don't feel the anti-lock system engaging either. Drove home and bleed the shit out of the brakes again and again a solid pedal with the engine off. Start it up and the brake pedal is as soft as an over ripe tomato. I bought the truck new and I have overhauled the brake system before with no problem. I followed the factory service manual. Did I miss a step? Any ideas please?

Did you let the master cylinder reservoir run dry? If so your ABS modulator pump is likely holding air, it needs a scan tool to activate the pump while bleeding.

Short of that, did you do anything with the rear brakes or the front wheel bearings during all this? Am I right to assume the brake pedal feel was normal before the brake replacement?

Didn't do anything to the rear brakes other than bleed them and didn't touch the wheel bearings. The pedal movement was fine before I started this job. Did this to the truck twice before and no problems, maybe I was lucky. I removed the calipers one at a time. I find it easier to bleed them one at a time and go back and do a quick bleed on the system. The master cylinder did empty when I remove the brake lines.

Thank you very much for your help.

Bleed bleed bleed. You start at right rear open slowly watch for little bubbles in clear line from bleeding.12 or 13 times then move to left rear same slow work all air out. Then pass front again slowly .fluid will blow over air if you go to fast.I know yes it takes A L o n g Time!.Rear drums make up first feel on pedal then proportionally to the front pads.ps are roots on correct sides.?And pads need to bed in.Yes it sucks unless u r getting paid by the hour....Good luck
