Multi Tool Suggestions

I carried an original Leatherman in my back pocket for almost 10 years, before losing it over the back of the sailboat on the 2nd date with my wife. She gave me a Gerber Multiplier that year for Christmas and I've been pretty happy with it ever since.

We took the sailboat out yesterday and I managed to set the Gerber down on the tongue of the trailer and didn't realize that I'd forgotten to pick it up until we'd already gotten home. I'm a little bummed out, but she shrugged it off and said we'd just go to base tonight and get a new one at the PX.

Anyone have suggestions for a more pocket friendly multi tool that still has a decent blade, good pliers, and is going to last a life time? It seems like they're all either too big to fit in my pocket or feel really cheap.

 

Go with a leathermen again. Nothing else really compares.

I've used the Leatherman Freestyle for a few years now, thanks to a friend who works for Leatherman. It's small, simple, and does the job. Recently I picked up the Signal tool, but it seems pretty large to me (and kinda clunky. If the Freestyle is too small for you, then try the Skeletool SX

 

For years I carried a Leatherman Wave and it served me well. I received a Gerber Suspension as a gift and I find myself liking that just as well. I really like the spring loaded handles that keep it in the open position. Very convenient for pulling porcupine quills from curious dogs.

Leatherman skeletool is my personal favorite.

 

I have had the same leatherman for years. The new multitools just seem cheap now.

I would say leatherman wave, but as this is your 3rd multitool, i think its $100 price tag might not be the best idea. So instead i will say a leatherman wingman, it is very much like the wave, has a knife blade, and a pair of scissors, you can use without opening the multitool, has pliers, wire cutters and the normal things one expects, but it is around $30, i even found mine at tractor supply for $15.

i always liked the leatherman charge/tti. i recently sold it and got the leatherman signal. its a bit bigger but pretty cool. the charge tti is expensive though. i think $160. the signal is $100.

 

I'm on my 3rd or fourth Leatherman Wave. It's still "original" from my first purchase but I've sent it in several times for warranty repair and they just send me a new one every time. I think it went through a redesign a few years ago.

 

Leatherman Charge Ti. I've had this one for over 10 years and it's still flawless. Well except when I used the wire cutters to cut a nail for an emergency shear pin on my boat motor. Little nick there but still works great. Expensive yes- worth it? Absolutely.
