Thought you might find this interesting.
    It's the A750 pdf.
Flex lockup strategy with and without AI.
Uphill/downhill shift strategy with and without AI.

    See pages 29, 33, & 34

OK...So going to S5 does make a difference...

    - eliminating flex lock-up when decelerating at 3rd and lower gears
    - canceling AI-shift at elevation changes....

So when AI-shift is canceled, is the standard shift pattern based on driver intention + rpm?

I've driven mine over 6K miles and I have to say I'm getting used to it. Around town, or on level roads, I just put it in D. In the mountains (I'm in California, lots of local hills up to 2-3K ft, plus frequent drives to the Sierra from sea level to 9K) I've tried ECT but finally just started using S mode. Honestly, that works fine. 3rd, 4th or 5th depending on grade and speed. At worst, it kicks down occasionally. If it downshifts too often, I click it down to a lower gear. I've started driving it like a clutch-less manual (i.e., assume I'm smarter than the trans after 45 years of driving) and I'm pretty happy with it. Gassed up in Lake Tahoe, over Spooner Summit to 395, a few miles of dirt roads, back over Ebbetts Pass and Pacific Grade Summits (over 3k feet climb) and back to sea level, averaged 23 mpg, with a roof top tent on the roof. DCSB 4wd.

I don't think there's a standard pattern; just the one best suited to all the input.
AI cancels driver intention support and road condition support.

The problem I have is after down shifting from 6th gear for an overpass when the road flattens out it will settle in 5th gear and stay there till the next overpass !!! If I rap the gas pedal it will up shift to 6th gear. Also when using the cruise if I disengage let the vehicle slow down 5 to 15 mph (while running 60-70 mph) the transmission will down shift and rev the engine to 4500 rpm.

Anyone else have these problems ?¿?

S mode makes all the difference in the mountains. I was disappointed when I first drive this thing west from Denver on I-70. After taking it out and playing with it a few more times it runs fine in the mountains when in S Mode, mainly because I can prevent it from upshifting. My problem when in D is that I'll be going up a steep sustained grade in 4th and if I have to let off the gas slightly due to traffic or something it'll upshift to 5th and basically downshift seconds later.

+1 for S mode. ECT is better than nothing in some conditions, but in the mountains, freeway or 2 lane, uphill or down, S mode lets you put it in the gear you should be in, or at worst one gear higher. Cruise control is really only suitable for level roads and speeds which keep you in one gear. Take control and drive this truck like you're in charge of the gears and speeds, and it does OK!

I finally had time to take it into the dealership today. Quart low on transmission fluid.
They also aligned the box to the cab.

    Have you tried S- mode?
    Try S5 If you haven't.

I have used S5 and it is better. The service writer said that there is an update for the transmission coming soon. Hopefully that is true.

I think the update is already out at some dealers. Like i said after my 5k service the transmission is completely different. No slipping, no delay, holds gears longer before dumping it in 6th and downshifts to the correct gear on its first try. Its like the way its supost to be. mpg seem to have increased aswell.

Hoover Toyota did the service on it here in AL. They changed oil, rotated tires, checked alignment, lubed and they said downloaded all the latest updates from Toyota. I thought they were reffering to the stereo system updates.... but transmission issues all seem a thing of the past.

I have tried to stay out of this conversation because at first I wasn't seeing most of the issues. That being said I was only doing local drives around town and no real highway driving. Other than the issue of up shifting to 6th gear going uphill at 50kph I really had nothing to complain about. This last few weeks however we took the truck for a nice long drive with all kinds of different terrain and the hills were turning me into a swearing aggressive driver who was hell bound to blow the motor and tranny out of this truck. It's crazy that you build a truck in 2016 that has a transmission that behaves this way. Feels like I was driving an old chev..... Lol. Anyway I found that driving in S mode and keeping it limited to 5th gear seems to help, limiting 6th gear for long flat drives with no head wind.
To me it now just seems like a 4 speed transmission with an overdrive on an overdrive.
To keep a motor that has no power in low rpm constantly in that range seems crazy.

mikey4x4 , Birmingham. Would love to talk to PPortera. proud four time owner of Tacoma DCSB double cabs V6 auto trans., until my special ordered three month wait 2016 same configuration. The words dismayed, disappointed , baffled ownership does not describe the experience. will not elaborate for 16 Tacoma owners know full well our plight. Toyota , time to address the issues, correct issues (numerous) , and stop hiding behind the hallowed T crest.word is out with Tacoma owners, twins are building a potential take over, and with all that is going on with Tacoma, Frontier is building steam, why could be related to Toyota turning deaf ears to the loyal Tacoma owners...... May and June Tacoma sales down.....go figure
