You could always use a sound processor to get the sound that you want, that would allow you to use the stock head unit and still get a great sound. That what i did and i can tell you i will never have another build without a processor. And you can find them for cheaper than most head units.

Here is a picture of the quailty of help you get from @Mr Marv...

I picked it up on EBay. Very well made, 1/2 MDF and upholstered very nicely. I think this is the person I bought from but not certain it's been a few years ago. Looks like they have moved the speaker terminals from the inside (which makes way more sense) to the outsides. That's why I'm not positive. Here's a link:

Watch out for ebay boxes. The MDF they use is cheap, constructions is sub-par most of the time. Lots of times the air space they say they have is not correct.

I operate a CNC panel saw and multi-head router on a daily basis. I cut MDF (HDF and LDF also) most every day. And yes, there are different grades. The material in the box I bought is on par with any other MDF I process. As far as volume, I can't say as I've never done the math. I did however, fill the box with fiberfill before mounting the subs.

    My two cents.

I changed the stock head unit out for a Pioneer AVH-P4400BH. My friend, who is less sensitive to sound than I am, noticed a difference immediately even with the stock (i.e. shit) speakers.

Built a sealed enclosure to house a Hertz 10" sub.

And a rack for two JL Audio amplifiers, both Slash series (300/4 and 250/1).

Made some adapter rings out of HDPE and mounted up some Hertz component speakers in front, and coaxials in back.

If you have tools, skill, and a place to do this stuff, it isn't hard. If you don't, what you'll spend in tools would possibly equal that of having it installed. That said, you won't learn anything and you won't get the same kind of satisfaction.

I typically don't like to comment on other peoples products however in this case I just gotta let you guys know their claim of 1.20ft^3 per sub is so far fetched it's not funny.
