I know nothing about CB radio use in Canada.

Do we have specialty channels like #9 and #19 in the USA, or are we still using smoke signals?

What is a good compact unit choice?

Radio use around my area is all over the map. It seems like the old school guys run CBs but they aren't in nearly every truck. Newer types like myself just use FRS offroad since in close its actually better. Then there are the hardcore types who have HAM radios and sometimes even more complicated setups that even let them send SMS messages from anywhere via repeater. Oh, and there are also a few guys buying and using Chinese radios that can hit all of the frequencies illegally but who don't give a shit about rules because they think they are above them.

Like I said, a bit of everything. I'm still hoping some day to get a HAM license and install one of those Chinese radios myself. I'd like to at least be somewhat legal.

We have a dual band amateur radio plus a cb in the truck.

The cb is more for fun - because it doesn't require a ticket or any sort of rules/ training etc you get a lot of junk on there. You also get skip from truckers with amplified mics.. It's amusing, but usually turned down and just in the background.

I got a Cobra 75wxst because I wanted the smallest one - where the radio is in the handset - like the Midland 75.
In my 86 I had a cobra cb with a PA under the hood- good times.

Depends how compact you want? I picked up a United 520XL for use in the bush, and it actually works half-decent on the highway too. It's not exactly the fanciest of units, but it's small and easy to mount anywhere. If you want something a bit fancier with auto-squelch or whatever there are plenty of units out there, but mine seems to work.

Channel 19 is pretty active along the major highways up here, and is the defacto driver channel, but it's also easy to get privacy on a different channel if you're driving on a road-trip with some friends. I'm not 100% sure if channel 9 is the emergency channel, but I haven't needed to give it a try to be certain.
