So my plan was to install some amber running lights on my side steps - I'd like to put them right on the side of the truck, facing out. They will illuminate the steps when entering and also stay on as running lights. However, I'm starting to wonder if it would be illegal unless the lights above the rear steps were red (thinking as if they were side marker lamps). Is there a certain point past the center of the vehicle where you have to switch from amber/orange to red?

It might depend on your state laws. It seems many states have different laws regarding color and placement of additional lights.

I wouldn't think you would need to use red unless the lights were between the rear axle and the rear of the vehicle.

Good call - I guess I will have to stop by the courthouse sometime this week and ask.

Not trying to be rude at all, but this is all that was done:

    Glad you got your answer!

In general, amber lights aren't an issue. It's colored lighting anywhere on a vehicle besides white/yellow to front and red to rear.

I have LOTS of amber lights and have never been stopped even in a city where the cops are notorious for writing tickets.

And yes, this is how my truck looks at night when I'm diving on the road.
(except for the red interior lights and headlights)

Well, in this case perhaps, but he did hook me up with a made from scratch wiring diagram Thursday.

Looks good - yeah, after some light reading it looks like amber is fine. It's blue that the authorities appear to get uptight about.
