I just bought a 2006 RC 2wd auto and I plan on making a 4x4 toy out of it (I don't care if you think buying a 4x4 is easier, cheaper. Keep that ish to yourself). Since the auto trans is a a340e, I was wondering if anyone has had one apart or can tell me if the auto trans is basically the same as the 1st gen tacos. I am either looking to swap the trans with a 4x4 version or swap the tailhousing so I can use a transfer case, I'd prefer to swap the entire trans.

Several guys on here have converted their Prerunners to 4x4, is yours a prerunner or 5 lug? Prerunners are relatively easy to convert because they are built on the 4x4 Tacoma frame. Just have to collect the parts. Converting a 5 lugger may be more trouble than it's worth...

Never seen a RC Prerunner and I'm pretty sure I said I didn't care to hear anyone's opinion about converting my truck. I did not state any other intentions other than the trans conversion so if we can stick to the transmission question that would be great.

    Post title says 4 cyl - I owned a last year - 2004 - 1st Gen 4 cyl automatic. It had the A44D transmission.

The following might help - Factory Service Manual info for a lot of Tacoma's and other Toyota's. When you click on it, you may have to wait for the screen to fill in. Also, you will notice in many cases there's an ONLINE version and a DOWNLOADABLE version. I have found in some cases the ONLINE version doesn't work well. The DOWNLOAD does. You download and extract it out as it's in zip format. The advantage here is it's now saved on your hard drive. Many here will point to a web site that has the same info, but one of these days, Toyota lawyers might get wind of it and force it to be closed down.

    Thanks.
The FSM's don't show much. In my searching it seems that they use the same transmission up to 2012, but some of the components are on different sides.

This taco will be replacing my other wheeler. It was cheap and runs good. My plans won't be what is normally seen here.
