Looking to upgrade from my 2003 Regular Cab 4 Banger with 195k on it....family has finally outgrown it, otherwise I would probably just take it to my grave.

As much as I would love to have an unlimited budget, I can just can't bring myself to do it, so I'm trying to stay in the 15-18k range.
Here's what I'm currently considering from a local dealership.... 2011 Double Cab PreRunner SR5 with 175k miles, out the door for $16,500.

I would appreciate any thoughts/comments/concerns you could provide.

    CONS
    • -High mileage for that year, only 20k less than my 03'.
    • - It is suffering from the common 4.0 V6 timing cover leak - dealer has it quoted as a $2k repair...obviously could get that lower away from the dealer, but I've seen threads where people don't repair it, and just keep an eye on it...thoughts?
    • - Still awaiting a reply on if the leaf springs have been replaced (The TSB thread on this site is awesome, btw)
    • - Was involved in a wreck back in 2013, seems to be a non-issue, but I would get a frame check anyways.

    PRO
    • - At the bottom end of my desired price range
    • - As you can see in the photo, the dealership added a pretty sweet set of black rims on it (magic trick of distraction away from problem??)
    • - No dents/dings/scraps at all..with a clean and buff she would be a pretty sweet looking ride.
    • - Spotless interior (although any interior beyond my 03' will be like driving an apartment)
    • - Love the truck, exactly what I want/need size wise.

    That's a nice looking truck..but...

    1. Seems a little high for a non-TRD Prerunner with that many miles
    2. Damn that's a lot of miles for a 2011

How the dealer selling a truck with a leaking timing cover? Price seems very high for the mileage and the known issue.

Too pricey for the question marks on the truck.

$13k would be my price target if you really want the truck imho

too pricey. I just paid that exact amount for my 2006 with only 69,000 miles in pristine condition. and it's a TRD Sport. took me about 4 months to find the deal I wanted.

According to KBB (and taking into account your location), FMV for that truck at a dealer is $14,500-$17,159 and fair purchase price is $15,830. They probably gave something like $12k for it when they took it as trade-in and they're expecting you to check the 'net and use that as a bargaining tool.

Those miles are surely all highway miles but if it were me I wouldn't purchase a vehicle with that many miles. I expect to put 100k+ on my vehicles and I'd have to assume major maintenance costs between 175k-275k miles, probably more than offsetting the money saved by not purchasing something with fewer miles.

Regardless, my situation is different than yours and I'm not going to say this is the wrong thing for you as I really don't know. Decide on your price, hold firm, and be willing to walk away - as soon as you can't, they get the upper hand in the negotiation.

    Good luck!
