Very nice write up, and I am so tempted to do this. However, I agree with some of the folks on the thread in that it probably won't last...haven't seen one yet that did.
I think a new surround is in my future due simply to the fact that I hate the number of clips it takes, and only want to do it one time.

Really slick paint job tho! Looks like you spent some quality time (with beers too).

I repainted my chrome one on my 2007 Tacoma and had no problems with it for years before sold the truck. If prepped & painted properly with quality paints, it will last.

You can't order just an OEM surround. You have to order the whole grill.

Copy that. Definitely have to go with quality materials. Like I said, I am on the fence about it for sure.
I thought I had found a dealer on Ebay with just surrounds, but I just looked again and they are not new...used parts with scratches and marks.
    Definitely looking for new.

Honestly, I'd say give this a shot. There was some really good advice for getting decent results given on this thread. If it turns out ok, you've saved some money and you've got a custom paint job to be proud of. Worst case, it lasts for a little while and starts to fade or flake and your still only out $30-40. Then you can order a brand new surround anyways. But that's just me...I always prefer to try something myself before buying the same thing.

So far, it's held up pretty well. I have had a few small chips start to appear, but I noticed it's only in the spots where the paint and clear coat weren't as thick as they should've been. But I think if you scuff the surface thoroughly and get thick even coats on you shouldn't have any issues. Let me know how it works out!
