I just bought a 2000 Tacoma V6 TRD SR5 with 150k miles on it. It has great maintenance records going up to 2008, then pretty much nothing. I know it has more maintenance than the records go up to, because the timing belt was done at 90k (sticker on there), oil was changed recently (sticker on windshield), trans fluid was done he said. So should I just assume he did the 120k service, 150k service and drive it until 180k before doing the every 30k service? I'd get the regular oil changes of course. At 180k it would also need the timing belt. Or should I at least change the trans fluid, diff fluid, transfer case fluid, any other fluids? Or can I just check the fluid and pump it back in if it looks good? Not sure what "good" would look like, though :p

Myself I change everything then I know it was done.

You do mean doing this yourself and not taking it some place ??

I would like to do as much of the work myself as possible. I'd like to potentially go out on big trips (maybe drive down to Baja) and have the know how to get myself fixed if needed. Every bit of mechanical knowledge I can gain would be great. I just don't want to waste money on unnecessary items.

Definitely change the fluids, lube up what needs to be greased, check the carrier bearing, change the belts, and check/change the spark plugs, and anything else you feel comfortable doing. Sometimes doing them yourself, even if you don't need to, is a good thing to do. That way you know what's done & when, and you'll have a little peace of mind.

I have seen first hand to many horror stories from Quicky Mart oil changes .

Not all are bad !! Some sell service that was never done

Differential fluids said to be changed and you could tell the fill plug was never removed.

Myself I just like knowing things are done.

@Wyoming09 You're right. Some places can be shady like that. The Quick Lube where my daughters take their truck & car tried to offer extra services at first. Then they realized that they weren't dumbies. Right away the guys were told "Just an oil change. I can do the air filter." or "My dad will do that." Because of that, the guys do the oil & filter change and lube. If they mention something about a needed service, they won't push in selling it. One guy actually told my older daughter "With this many miles, tell your dad that blah blah blah might need to be looked at."
