Hey I'm new to Tacoma world and trying to learn how to work on my truck myself. I didn't have a dad growing up or anyone to teach me about working on cars so I'm teaching myself. Well, the internet is actually. I've had my 99 2.7L pre runner for about 14 years and I'm finally trying to do maintenance on it myself. It needs a major tune up. I'm looking to change the belts now. They are looking rough. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Welcome.
If you are going to change belts you might as well do the water pump while youre at it.
I think both are reccomended at 150k.

Pick yourself up a good Haynes manual and do a search in the search window. I think there might also be sone links to some service manuals. (FSM).

    Good luck.

I have had a Haynes manual for years and it helps. Still not feeling really confident about this task. The most I've ever done is brakes and cleaning out the throttle body. This seems like a huge task.

I just hit the 200,000 mile mark and it hasn't been tuned up since probably 110 or so

image.jpg I changed the spark plugs out a little over a year ago. This year it failed emissions so I couldn't get my tag renewed. Being that I didn't need to drive it in a daily basis, I chose to just take my time and give the engine some tlc and clear the error codes before retesting it.

Looks like you might need a new TPS according to that inspection fail. DTC 1 P0120 on the printout.

Well I cleaned out the throttle body real good. I'm hoping that clears that code (fingers crossed) but I have no idea about the EGR fail. From what I've read it could be several things. Will an autozone diagnostics check give me more detail than the emissions report?

Does anyone know of a way to test this EGR valve to make sure it's working properly? I know I need some sort of vacuum to make it open and close, but I don't have one any the parts stores say they don't either. My error code is p0402 EGR excessive flow. Thanks

Don't know if my 2nd Gen Taco has an EGR valve, but I sure remember them from past cars I've owned. Easiest problem area to check is for broken/cracked vacuum lines. Other problem is soot and carbon build-up inside. youtube has numerous videos on how to clean them out.

    Misc links I came across.

Thanks a ton. I have cleaned it out really well. I'm hoping that it will solve my issues. I have excessive flow so I'm wondering if it's stuck in open.
