Your SPORT TRD (and all 2005-2008 Sport TRDs) have mechanical limited slip differentials. These are clutch packs inside the diff that applies frictions to slow a spinning tire so more power can go to the tire with traction. It is NOT selectable.

*In 2009, the mechanical LSD was replaced with electronic/ABS brake controlled limited slip and named TRAC. TRAC uses the ABS brakes and engine output regulation (throttle control) to slow a spinning tire. A quick press of the VSC button activates AUTO LSD (also called TRAC OFF) and that removes the engine regulation so more power can go to the tire(s). Stopping and holding in the button for 3 seconds turns off the TRAC and VSC, if desired for maximum tire spin.

it helped. Do people find mechanical ls helpful more on offroad trails or is it typically designed to help with traction on wet roads?

Personally - I'd put a mechanical limited slip in there. Your 2WD isn't going to be doing any really technical wheeling - that needs a front drive as well. An air locker rear requires a few more parts than you will want to maintain - and a low wearing Eaton TrueTrac differential will double the capability you have now. It will work well on wet roads - or sand - and you can "air down" and play a bit.

I was speaking of TRACtion control as mechanical limited slip was only offered from 2005-2008. It adds traction anytime one tire spins as it transfers power to the non-spinning tire. Wet roads or no roads, the benefit is still significant.

Just press the button to activate AUTO LSD, and you will have Toyota's version of Posi-Traction! At second :15>>>

Without TRAC or AUTO LSD, "one tire spins and the other does nothing"!
