    It's not about "clogging" anything.

A MAF is far more delicate than you would think- it's a small wire that gets heated up to a certain temperature. The MAF determines how much air goes past it based on how much electricity it has to use to keep the wire at that temperature (fast moving air cools it off quicker= more energy used= higher MAF air flow signal). With a little bit of math magic and knowing the diameter of the tube the MAF is in, you get a pretty accurate measure of how much air has come into the intake.

So then, when someone oils the living crap out of their oiled air filter, tiny little droplets of oil get sucked into the intake. No big deal for combustion. However, some droplets will land on that MAF wire. That wire now cools at a different rate than it would have normally. This changes the signal- only slightly at first, more drastically as more oil accumulates. It usually isn't enough to cause a check engine light, but you will notice degraded performance. It's not all doom and gloom, though, because MAF's can be cleaned.

(And as a side note this is why replacing a MAF that has gone "bad" is silly without trying the old "swish it around in a ziploc bag full of isopropyl alchohol" trick, which has saved me at least $1000 in MAF replacements over the years)

Anyways, I don't like oiled filters specifically because you have to find the "just right" amount of oil to add. Too little = not enough filtration, too much = droplets landing on your MAF.

I just don't get why people think these things do anything. They do nothing more than your paper stock air filter does, no horsepower gains, no MPG gains, and someone above said it. Noise if any is all it does
