What size is your SUP? This is the main function I want to install the roof rack for and I will be transporting at freeway speeds. Did you notice any loosening like rmcabee mentioned above your post? After a few months do you still think its a solid solution?

^ Exactly what I'm going for  I saw your write up that someone linked to awhile back. It's fantastic, but a little to involved for me. I was looking for something I could more or less just u-bold straight to factory crossbars.

I think this system is so modular that you could easily attach one via ubolts that fit I'm assuming your Yakima bars.

No loosening at all, and the rack is totally secure. The board is 14ft long. I've since got rid of the OEM rack not because it wasn't functional or sturdy, but simply because I installed a camper shell and had rails installed on the camper shell for a Yakima rack and just didn't like the look of the OEM rack on the truck. I had the same rack on my Subaru for years and carried 14ft SUP's and it performed wonderfully as well.

Good to know, thanks for the response. I have two 10'6" sups that I transport around and this is looking like a cost effective option for my 5 day old Tacoma.

The OEM is excellent as a cost-effective way to carry those two boards. I'd have no reservations doing that with the OEM rack. I doubt you'll find a better solution for around $200.

If i had it to do over again, I'd go to Fastenal and buy better bolts for the factory rack. They're pretty strippy. If you decide to use them, be careful.

Hmmmm, I accidentally cranked down pretty hard on the one side of my OEM roof rack and never stripped anything. Also uninstalled the rack pretty easily. I really have no complaints or bad experiences with the OEM rack and think it's quality for what it cost.

Not questioning quality. I'm speaking specifically of the front (smaller) screws that attach to the brackets and not the larger ones that attach to the roof of the truck.

I know what you were saying. I was also commenting on the hardware and thought it was fine. Didn't strip a thing.

Bolting to the OEM rack. Something like this is what I'm looking for:

    Or even ATV ramps:

Basically just need a metal/aluminum grid I can bolt to OEM crossbars.

Can anyone tell me if the OEM model that fits 2005-2015 Tacos will fit 2016's too? I see places on the internet that say it doesn't, but it never seems to come from someone who's actually compared the PT278-35140 (for 2016) and the PT278-35130 (2005-2015) side by side. The guy at the dealer parts dept said that the 140 just replaces the 130 and that he thought he sold the 130 to someone for a 2016. Are the dimensions actually different from 2015 to 2016 for setting up a rack? Or did they just "update" the same piece?

Yes, they WILL fit, and the only difference I have been told is the capacity rating, while one is rated to 75lbs and the other is rated to 100lbs? Sounds stupid though, but this is what I was told. I sold my 2016 OEM rack to a guy with a 2015 and he had no issues installing it and sent me pics.

Anyone know where I could get a hardware kit? Got a great deal on a rack but w/out the hardware. Would rather buy from someone other than a dealer who will charge triple.

It most likely will. The hole locations and size are the same from 2005 - 2015 as they are for the 2016+. Most rack companies manufacture one rack for 2005 - 2017.
