Kicking Around The Idea Of Getting A T4R

Been contemplating selling my 2nd Gen and getting a 2015-16 4Runner. Yeah, I wish i could have both but thats not an option. My biggest concern is the versatility of having a truck. I like the idea of being able to throw whatever I want whenever I want in the bed of the truck. No need to make calls to coworkers asking to borrow a truck. Anyone who swapped to a T4R have any regrets not having a bed?

 

Depends on how much you use the bed. Not exactly what you are asking but a major reason I went from a Jeep to a Tacoma was to have a bed. If you get a 4Runner, which are awesome btw, you should get a trailer and it can serve the same purpose.

Then you will only have two draw backs. One being the minor inconvenience of hooking unhooking and towing. Two being the unforseen need to haul something larger and you didn't bring a trailer.

If number two doesn't happen often I would say go for it.

 

FWIW ... I made the mistake of getting rid of a truck twice in my life ... Never again will I be without a truck.

I wanted a 4Runner too ... but stayed with a Tacoma

 

I recently got to rent a 4Runner for work. It was great! If I had the funds right now I would get one in a heartbeat.

BUT I'd also get a little trailer too.....not having a truck bed problem solved!

 

And as soon as you get back into a truck something always comes up where your happy to have the bed again. I don't think I will ever not have a truck again. Too convenient.

 

You are limited to one. Take a sheet of paper. Draw a line down the center. Write Tacoma at the top on one side; 4Runner on the other. List off advantages/disadvantages of each.

Review it repeatedly. Ask yourself what REALLY matters. You'll have it figured out sooner than you think and no matter which one you go with, you'll find yourself in situations where you wish you had the other.

In my humble opinion, if a pickup truck is not required daily, get the T4R. You can always rent a pickup.

 

Stop using your bed for a month. If you can live without it, switch on over.

I switched from the 4Runner to the Tacoma because I was using it like a pickup. Gas cans, chainsaws and firewood in the back and you get the fumes up front.

Keep your truck and get a cap.

 

FWIW I love the wife's TRD pro 4runner, but we have my 99 to use as a pickup

 

We had an Accord and a Cherokee before the Taco and shit was always hanging out the back windows. I purchased a 5X8 trailer for a cheap bed instead of buying a truck. I am still keeping the trailer in case I get quads or a side by side.

 

I've had both at the same time. I just recently sold the 4Runner because we had 3 vehicles...the Runner, Tacoma and the Sienna. I absolutely loved my '06...it was a V8, lifted, and just awesome. But in the end we sold it. I bought a shell for my Tacoma. I think you'll regret it if you get rid of the Tacoma...it's so versatile...especially if you get a shell.

 

This seems to be a common thought around these parts these days. I know many members who have made the jump and all are happy they did. All I can add is that I sold my 2014 Off Road 4x4 for a 2016 SR5 4x4 and I am SO HAPPY I did. The 4runner is so much nicer in every way. Buy a $500 trailer from CL and you are set. Lets face it, the small bed in these trucks are borderline useless anyway.

It all depends on what you do...If you have dogs...if you make regular visits to HD or Lowe's...if you do landscaping...I do all of the above. I have a big dog, I go to big box stores, I do part time landscaping...so if you don't use your truck as a truck...and want an awesome SUV grocery getter and that's all you use it for...by all means. I like the suggestion above...draw a line down a piece of paper and go at it.

Do you really want to hook up a trailer every single time you want to go to HD to get fertilizer, plants, 2x4s, a grill...etc??? I don't. I was in your same exact boat about 6 years ago. I had a 2011 Tacoma. sold it to get the 4Runner. The loved lasted for a few months until I started making trips to get flowers, wood...etc...

 

I owned a 03 4runner for 3 years and this pretty much sums up why I switched to a Tacoma. Depends if you value interior space more that a bed but with a roof rack and the tailgate windows that rolls down they can be pretty versatile on the go if you forgot to bring your trailer but really need to get that 12' 2x4 home.

 

Join the dark side. Make sure you get a roof rack and you can haul just as much in the 4Runner. All the seats fold flat.

Like others have said it depends how often you use the bed. In a given month how often have you taken advantage of it ( I mean hauling heavy stuff, large items or just dirty crap that you want to keep out of the cabin). If it isn't often then get the 4runner.

 

I came across a 2011 TR4 Trail Edition for a really good price in Jan 2015. The deal with my wife was I would sell the Tacoma (2006 TRD OR) within 2 weeks of buying the 4runner. FYI I drove the Tacoma to work today and the 4Runner is now hers haha. I will say, in that time we moved from an apt to a house and having the Tacoma saved us a small fortune. It may have taken a few more trips than with a full size bed, but between moving, picking up furniture (saving delivery costs), clearing out landscape (tree limbs/bushes/waste) etc. i am really happy we kept it. I am in a fortunate position to be able to justify both (gas prices dropping also helped me make my case) ;-)
Either way, like it was said if you can live without the bed that is the biggest change. I love both trucks so you can't go wrong.

The dirty thing is the only thing I miss. I don't like hauling dirty shit in my 4Runner. I will, it's just annoying.

 

My buddy has the new 4Runner TRD Pro. All I can say is they are very nice, Toyota did a great job on the design. My truck is paid off though so I'm sticking with it.
