    Hey Everyone,

I have a question for anyone with a light bar on their truck. I live in PA and they are saying the way I have my light bar wired is illegal. They want me to get a lighted switch. As well as I need to tie in the wiring to my head and fog lights so that way the bar can only be turned on when the lights are on. Anyone with any advice on the best way to do this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

20160627_113140.jpg Are you saying that they said the light bar needs to be wired so that it comes on WHEN the regular lights are turned on? Or you need to wire it so you only have the option to turn on your light bar when your lights are on? Whoever told you that sounds like they're blowing smoke up your ass. Light bars arent meant for on-road use. And as far as i know, its illegal to turn them on when you're on-road. They're too bright no matter what angle they're pointed at to be safe for on-road. To me, it seems like too much of a safety hazard. I really dont see how the wiring would be illegal in any way if the light bar is intended for off-road use. But, if you are wanting to wire it that way without further research of the real issue at hand, I dont think it would be too hard.
    How i wired mine:

-14 gage positive wire from battery to 40amp relay with an inline 20amp fuse, approximately 6" away from the relay

-14 gage power line from relay to light bar

-14 gage ground from relay to good ground

-on the same post of my relay where i wired my ground (from the step above) i connected another 14 gage ground to run to my light bar.

-14 gage wire from the relay, through the fire wall, and to the switch. In my case, the switch was under my dash.

-if your using a lighted switch, the switch itself has to be grounded. My switch is not lighted but it had a spot for a ground so i used it anyway. I ran my ground from my switch to one of the bolts on my brake pedal.

-Find the fuse under the steering column that is related to your headlights. Now im not 100% sure, but i believe that fuse should only have power running to it when your headlights are switched on. Add a fuse tap in this location. (you may need it a volt meter for this part). Put a 2amp or 3 amp in the fuse tap in the slot closest to where the fuse tap plugs in. Put a 10amp in the second slot.

-14 gage wire from fuse tap to switch

And your all done. Check out this thread. Its amazing and its what i followed to wire my truck.

Only thing I ever ran into was that they wanted the off road lights to have covers on them.

I'd get them to show me the regulation that said so.

K so I found a thing that does say the switch needs to be lit but otherwise idk. And it's specifically for roof/roll bar lights so not sure what applies to your valence bar
