I apologize for the chain link in the pic but this was as close as I could get. I saw this amphib at the local airport. She looked in good shape and there are a few maintenance stands around her so somebody's taking care of her.

...^^^... The 3 planes seem to have the same paint patterns with colors.

What type of amphibian is it .... just curious .... ???

I had a chance to fly in an old PBY Catalina a long time ago, but passed it up. Big mistake on my part.

My 5th grade teacher flew PBYs' in WW2

Thanks MT Girl! I figured it was a Grumman but couldn't remember what they were called. I try to swing by the airport every few weeks and see what's there, nothing as cool as the B24's and 17's that you saw. The only privately owned AV 8 Harrier called the airport home for awhile but I'm not sure it's still there.

    Lots.
Plat cam footage was released from the E2 cable snap incident in March. I believe it injured eight sailors on the flight deck. As a carrier aviator, watching the E2 pull it out at the end makes my butt hole pucker.

. . . .  . . . . Good post ...... A pitching/rolling deck on a LPH can be difficult for a rotary wing ... but this video was UNBELIEVABLE to watch and should make a great training video too.

It's not what the crew was saying the moment they go over the deck, it's what they're saying the moment they're flying away. I bet they never turned downwind. I hear they're still climbing away. But in all seriousness, unlike the Rhino, prop aircraft don't land and immediately go full power because, they don't have the spool up time of jet aircraft. They knew shit had gone wrong probably about 2 secs before going off the end. With the muscle memory you develop in aircraft, that's plenty of time to go to full power, raise the hook, and get the flaps set for an emergency flyaway. So within the cockpit they probably don't say anything to each other, because they're too busy doing stuff with their hands.

Just to add, a hornet or super hornet is never going to recover from something like that. It's always going to be an ejection scenario.

@Mtnflyer has way more experience than me maybe he'll chime in.

    Whoa. Kudos to that aircrew.

Reminds me of a flight safety video we'd have to watch on our our quarterly safety days. One of my units was full of "banked" pilots, so our safety videos were all flight related. In one of the clips, an F-8 Crusader was having hydraulic and engine issues inbound to the carrier. What was cool was they'd spliced in the tower radio, so we heard the conversation. The video showed the bird shaking violently as it approached, but when the engine caught fire the tower ordered the pilot to eject. Once the canopy blew and and seat rocketed out, the now-empty bird fell toward the deck - and caught the wire. The fire crews were all over the bird before the chute even hit the water. Our flight safety officer kept pointing out that ejecting was still the right thing to do, but we still laughed at that F-8 landing itself.

I went looking for it on YouTube, but there's a LOT of carrier mishap videos to slog through!

    That. Was. Insane.

I can't imagine how intense it was in the cockpit for those first few seconds as they dipped over the edge, knowing that an aircraft carrier is barreling down on you if you crash in the water.
