My family runs a cattle operation. We presently have an 08 ram 2500. We are looking for a new one. I would like to go diesel, but for $10k more and the price of fuel, it isn't worth it to us. We only tow a 5th wheel cattle trailer a few times a month. If you were to buy a 3/4 ton gasoline truck, what would you buy?

Would it be worth my time looking at Ford? We always had problems with transmissions in them. However that was an 91 f-350 and a 94 f-150. I would assume they have improved since then.

I mean, manual transmissions are pretty cheap so we just replaced the one on the 350. We still have it. It has problems starting if you don't have a heater plug. However, a couple years ago the 150 engine blew up. We replaced it with a v8 Dakota. Bad idea. So last year we replaced that with a 2011 AC SR5 Manual. Great truck for farm work!

I tow boats many miles per year, always bought fords. Recently I had the opportunity to use a Chevy 3/4. It was a deisel so I can't compare power but ride and handling were much better with the Chevy. The Chevy could turn circles inside a ford. So my 2000 mi. test tow opened my eyes, I want a 2500 HD diesel and would consider a gasser.

I would only consider a gas engine with a V8 ecoboost option.
    I prefer fords.

My buddy has a 2011 f250 with a 6.2 in it. Good power, decent fuel mileage, and 140k on it with no major issues at all.

I paid like 42kish for a tradesman crew cab long bed 4x4....
If that price Is for the gas one then just get a diesel plus towing with a diesel is so much fun

Towed 5x10 box trailer with 500 lbs in it 2016 f250 4x4 6.2 gas 600 mile round trip 10.8 hand caculated. 05 f250 5.4 same trailer motorcycle in bed, motorcycle in trailer 2800 miles round trip 9.4 hand calculated. 2013 6.0 gas Chevy 2500 8k goose neck with 9 motorcycles 1500 mile round trip 3.2 hand calculated. Same goose neck trailer and 10 bikes this time, 2013 duramax 11.4 average 600 mile round trip. 05 6.0 powerstroke 33 foot toyhauler 300 mile round trip 9.5 average. These are my experiences with gas and diesel, gas gets job done, diesel pulls hills better mileage more cost to maintain.

Big fan of GM's big gas engines. They make good solid gasoline engines that are almost as good as their diesel counterparts. Ford's V10 isn't a slouch either, but when it comes to work equipment I feel the simpler the better, the ford modulars have too many moving parts.
