The Amok? Yeah- it's really cool. Release two lines and you lay down. Cinch them up and you have a recliner. Reach over and open a little stuff sack and you can zip up the bug screen (already ready to go). It's really slick and well thought out.

He let me take a 30 minute nap in it. Really nice..

 

That's a doozy of a hammock! I get the same features with less hassle. (IMO).
Anyone who switches to a hammock is good by me! Love mine (all 11 of them!) and haven't camped on the ground in 10 years!

 

Went camping in Lanesboro, MN this past weekend.

 

You would of seen more titties on the river between Winona and La Crosse. Oh how I miss my days on a towboat! On the weekends if we were through painting the boat for the year, we all had a pair of binoculars in our hands looking at the scenery as we went up or down the river. I could tell you some stories!

We went tubing down the river while we were there, was great.

 

sure looks a lot like the Kodiak Canvas Flex Bow 10x14 that I have. Awesome tent. We use 4 Cam-o-cots stackable bunk bed cots so we have the other half of the tent for gear.

 

Another camping trip in the books. Dry weight 2800lbs. No issues and averaged 13.8 mpg 80% flat land.

 

Yup, same basic design. Kirkland Outdoors (Springbar) has been making these tents since the 50's or 60's in Utah. Kodiak ran with the same design but outsources to China. Both are good tents, both have slight differences and plusses and minuses.

 

Can't wait for the RV show this winter, my wife actually asked about buying a camper now that we have a truck. I'm so stoked

For six summers, the back of a Toyota Tacoma with a shell on it was my home while raft guiding. This was in my first Tacoma, a '96. When I got the opportunity five years ago to buy my best friend's '01 TRD with 80,000 miles for $5,500, I upgraded. With a five speed, I now had my dream truck. It is perfect...until you find out your wife is pregnant the second time. We are figuring out how to shoehorn the carseat in the extended cab with one, but two...it was time to get a new truck. Now our 2016 TRD Off-Road with a standard (damn straight!) is on order. However, this did not stop us from hooking up our 16' Airstream and heading to Idaho from coastal Washington with our raft for a week leading up to the fourth of July.



I did not weigh the whole shebang, but the curb weight of the truck is listed at 3,877 pounds. The trailer is 2,750 dry, but 3,500 GVR. Adding the shell (~300), raft (~300), frame, oars, boats, and other assorted gear (~500-700)...we may have been pushing it a bit on slightly oversize tires (P265's) for a 3.4L six with 178,000 miles. Then again, it is a Toyota.

As you may notice in the photo, we are using load balancing bars, and there is a Tekonsha P2 to make sure we stop. The passes in Idaho and the headwind coming back down the Columbia River Gorge on the way home made the truck work, but it definitely will pull it. Granted, you are not going 80, but holding 65 with the aforementioned notable exceptions is not hard. The temperature gauge never even budged, even pulling the passes with upper 90's heat.

With the second kid on the way, I am not a big believer in over-trucking, so I am going with a 2016 four-door TRD Off-Road with a standard. Yes, get your rant on about how much better automatics are for towing. I've been driving standards since I was 13. Coming down a pass, I can control this load with the gears better than heating up brakes with an automatic. The new Tacoma does not have a descending load control option on the automatic, and besides, driving a stick is fun!

I am a one percent truck guy. While I really do not modify them much, I use them like trucks are meant to be used. My trucks work for their keep not just four wheeling, but also towing. In both respects, I have high expectations, but am a firm believer in not over-trucking. Once I get the new rig set up with a brake controller, shell, and racks on the cab and shell, I'll let you know how the set-up works. My guess is stepping up from 190 hp / 220 ft.lb. to 278 hp / 265 ft.lb. will definitely be noticeable improvement.
