    I keep a spare contactor and start cap on hand now and my unit is less than two years old. It just failed three weeks ago on a Thursday night, the compressor start cap shit the bed so I was up and at the supply house at 6 a.m. the next morning buying parts to repair it.

    The unit was under warranty and Chas Roberts showed up and didn't fix shit because it restarted after sitting. (duh, the compressor will start without assistance when it's cold and doesn't need the extra torque) Argued with the dolt for five minutes and then told him to GTFO. Fixed it myself and haven't had a problem since. I need to pick up a spare condenser fan motor next.

    thanks guys.. we are gonna start comparing prices.

    Tech just left.. replaced the capacitor and cleaned the coils.. house is cooling now.. down to 88. That should buy use some time, and if we decide to get a new unit through these guys(which they have been pretty good so far) we get the amount we spent today credited towards a new unit. From them...a 14 Seer is 6500 (6100 with our credit) installed.

    I feel your pain. I had a 1200 dollar AC repair last week. Thankfully I found out the next day that it was under warranty so I'm getting reimbursed by the ac company.. just in time as my new windows and doors get it stalled tomorrow and I just installed my Nest tonight
