Corrosion on Access Cab Door Latch – Solutions?

    Just seeing if anyone else out there had a similar issue with corrosion on their access cab door latch, what they did to remove the corrosion and finally prevent the corrosion from occurring again.

    Frankly I’m a bit surprised the corrosion on the latch turned considering that I wash my truck regularly winter and summer and I NEVER let any crud build up in that area around the latch.

    Did a search on Tacomaworld and could not find any info on this - that's why I'm posting here.

    My AC never had that problem - perhaps there was a bad batch where the plating was off.

    You could remove it, clean it up, and do a DIY re-plate of the zinc. That's the hard way. The easy way would be to replace the striker with a new part from Toyota.

    Who knows, you might even get it covered under the corrosion warranty :confused:

    Thanks for the response.

    I suspect that might be correct - the plating was off on my rear bumper too (started showing surface rust 20,000 kms from brand new) and they replaced it on warranty.

    Solution: wire brush it, then occasionally spray it with oil. Or for the brute force approach, have it galvanized.

    Note: paint won't work -- it'll just flake off.

    Or... just leave it. It will take a LOT more rusting than that to actually become a problem. Given that its like that after 6 years, you're looking at roughly 600 years before it is serviceable.

    Mine did the same on my old 08. I bought a new one and sprayed the hell out of the flat mounting part and torques with rustolem. Problem solved

    LS1 swap with nitros.
    I'd suggest replacing with a new one... but you may want to get the new one coated by an outside plating house (in Zinc) as well as have them treat it with a sacrificial coating of yellow chromate (looks like yellow anodize). This will add another level of protection as the yellow chromate layer will be eaten away instead of the Zinc being attacked. Should last you much longer.
