I have a 2010 Tacoma, 2.7 L, 5 speed. Mice invaded the truck and built a nest in the plastic box holding the engine air filter. Believe it or not, the little f****rs ate a tennis ball sized hole in the engine air filter element (I have photos) and then built a raunchy nest beneath what was left of it. The secondary air filter protected the engine but it looks real dirty. Has anyone ever removed the secondary air filter, cleaned it, and then reinstalled it securely in the box? If so, can you provide instructions? Also, if there is anyone out there with a spare secondary air filter who would like to sell it let me know. BTW, the mice also built a nest on the cabin air filter - another reeky mess. Mice suck - yeah, I know, I need a cat. Thanks.

Are you talking about that carbon/charcoal filter on "top" of the air filter istelf? If you are, you have to drill out those plastic rivets to remove it. You can't put it back in once you do that. You'd have to order a new airbox assembly in order to get the charcoal filter back.

Lots of people remove it just because... but I'm with you I like the added protection it gives from things like mice

Yes, the "top" carbon/charcoal filter is what I'm talking about. All suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Yes you can reinstall the charcoal (secondary) air filter after drilling out the rivets. Get a small drill and *carefully* drill holes into the base where the rivets used to be. Then find small sheet metal screws (or maybe wood screws) that will fit into these little holes. Then just reattach the charcoal filter. May need to cut the screws shorter so that the screw head can push firmly against the filter.
