I have A regular cab 4 cyl rwd tacoma and I'm trying to hook up a tow package on it. I bought the hitch and mounted that but I dont have a hook up for the wiring (that i know of) I dont want to go splicing into the wires of I dont have to. I found this connector and idk what its purpose is. It leads up into the tailgate and then it disappears. The advanced auto guy told me thats not a trailer connection. It has 4 wires like the 4flat trailer hook ups do. Can anyone help me out. Does anyone know what that is? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Oh ok Ok ok thank you. So my only option to hook a trailer up is to splice into the wires then I guess?

Nope. You could purchase the four pin trailer towing harness or an aftermarket one. No cutting all plug and play.

I'm pretty sure that connector is for the rear backup camera which is attached to the the tailgate latch assembly on some models.

What Caribe said. Basically remove the rear driver tail light, plug these inline, and route the 4 pin connector wires down through the space behind the tail light and under the bed to your hitch. Go watch install videos on etrailer. They are only good for smaller trailers that do not require brakes or additional power/ accessories. For those, you need a 7 pin setup that runs power from your truck battery to a brake controller in the cab and back to the hitch.
