So, I've had my 2016 Tacoma in the shop twice in the three weeks I've had it. My issue? Other than the transmission issues everyone else is reporting, I was also experiencing shuttering in the cabin when braking hard (typically shutters when I slow down to about 25 or so).

I dropped the truck off yesterday to have everything rechecked after complaining to the service manager. They called me today with this... the drum breaks were mismachined at the factory and is causing shuttering and grabbing issues when slowing. I was also informed that 3-4 more Tacomas came in after mine with the same complaints. They opened cases with Toyota with all of our transmissions, although they claim the fluid was fine. As for the drums, he said Toyota has issued a TSB for the problem (although I haven't seen anything about it) and they have ordered replacements from Toyota.

I've read on several other threads about random shuttering in the cabin and this could possibly be the problem.

I'll update everyone once I get the drums replaced and let you know if it solves the problem.

It's a cast slab of iron, made at a vendor. With the braking surface cut just enough to receive the shoes. There have been some Chinese drums that are miscast, but I don't know that Toyota uses those.

But the cutting is a standard set up that is 'round', just like the drum.

IMHO it would be very difficult/unlikely to 'mis-machine' a drum. Not impossible, but very improbable. And it may have happened at a factory, but not a Toyota factory. Just like it's not Toyota oil or Toyota filters. Anyway..........

That would be nice. While you wait, you might like to see this.

Yeah, I agree with you, but I'll remain optimistic just because I really want these issues to be fixed, and I guess it's better than them just blowing me off. I had read some of the threads about the shuttering, but hadn't seen the one about the drums. His results were a little disappointing to say the least....

Actually the best part of your situation. 'Cause at least they've acknowledged an issue.

My shutter doesnt occur if i brake while drive is in neutral. Makes me think it is engine braking as if the torque converter hasnt fully released. Around 25mph, its geared down and engine rpm is around 1000rpm.. My .02's

While I'm waiting on the dealership, I decided to do a little leg work and call Toyota and see if there truly is a TSB for this issue. The gentleman I spoke with told me there weren't any official TSBs yet; however, there was a Tech Tip that addressed issues with the back drum brakes and the vibration experienced while coming to a stop.

I also threw in the transmission problems again for good measure and of course got the ol' "Toyota isn't aware of any issues with the transmission." Then he followed up with "but I'll admit that I've had a good number of calls complaining about the same issue."

He's suggestion to be was to take it to another dealership for a second opinion and keep hammering on it.

I took mine in Monday for its 5k service and had them look at it for shudder under braking. They resurfaced the drums and it has been smooth since. Knock on wood...

Just got back from the dealership after replacing my drums. Big difference when slowing down. No longer experiencing the dramatic shuttering. The tech told me they were badly warped, but it wasn't anything I did to it that Toyota just had a bad batch. Go figure...

Glad it worked for you, and thank you for completing the thread with your report.

My only suggestion would be to now be sure you take some time to bed your new brakes properly, just to be sure you get great results.

So unfortunately the shuddering came back today. Drove great yesterday and then halfway through the day today, shuddering. Put it through the same testing I did yesterday, same road, etc. Not sure what to make of it, but I guess I'll be back at the dealership next week.

Sure. I've read those forums and have always felt that slight vibration, but this is a little more severe. They said when they got the drums off they were extremely warped. Whether that's the cause or not I'm sure it wasn't helping.
