Finally bit the bullet and dumped the OEM HU. The OEM HU has the worst AM tuner ever. I do a lot of rural driving and end up in areas with only country or religious stations. I figure if the NEX doesn't have a better AM tuner, at least I have lots of options for media input and Android Auto is the bomb!

I found some good solutions for USB and HDMI connections. These panel mount HDMI couplings fit perfectly in the center console switch blanks. I'm talking PERFECT like they were made for them. I used a mill, but dremel or exacto and files you can cut the hole and clear out anything in the way.

    I ordered 2 of these:

I figure I can modify one to take two USB cables for the 2 USB outs on the NEX. My other 2 switch positions have lighting switches in them.

The idatalink Maestro is a cinch to install (except for the cam function). It is a bitch to fit all the extra cabling in behind the new unit. You can tuck the Maestro straight in front between the air ducts and dash and all the plugs stuff to the right in a little opening there.

I used the Metra surround and it fits GREAT after trimming. There is a flange around the radio opening that protrudes and keeps it from snapping all the way. Only the L&R sides need to be cut off, 5 min with a sharp utility knife.

Tested BT mic locations and clipped to the headliner in front of the driver is MUCH clearer than dash or steering column. I'm guessing the headliner absorbs some of the background noise.

I'll post pictures and more detail later, when the final is done. I have 2 questions before I can finish.

1 - Does anyone know how to hook into the back up cam to allow cam anytime. The Maestro instructions talk about 20 or 24 pin connectors which are no where to be found near the radio. I found the thread for the kick panel connection, but that's only for reverse.

2 - Any good tricks for fishing the BT mic through the A-pillar? Damn, too bad the steering wheel didn't work, that location is a piece of cake.

The mod on the USB parts is incredibly easy. Unsnap the front cover. At this point you could clip the wires and re-solder if you want to shorten the 1 meter leads. Otherwise start scoring carefully with an exacto knife (yes I cut myself). The cover is recessed and 0.090" thick, so you'll have to get deep. If you do the 2 notched sides and one of the non notched, you can pop it out with a screwdriver. Repeat with the second one. Swap out the 2 USB plugs and snap everything back together. Use some super glue for the back cover.

    WHY?

I pretty adept at ferreting out parts and cannot find anyone who makes a dual USB for Toyota switch blanks.

The HDMI will go all the way in.
