I'm very interested in running the Poker Flat trail (between Downieville and La Porte) and would welcome any advice from people who've done the trail. From what I've read Poker Flat seems like a solid moderate trail, so I'm not terribly concerned, if this is NOT the case please let me know. My main concern is time. Unfortunately due to work and kids schedules I only have one full free day to do the trail. My plan is to drive from the east bay out towards Downieville, on a Saturday early evening, and staying at a hotel close to Downieville as possible. Then bright and early Sunday morning hitting the trail, hopefully completing all 26+ miles (during day light) and then drive home (3.5 to 4 hours) from La Porte. Is this schedule unrealistic, or not recommended? I would hate to do all this, rush and then miss out on all the "cool" stuff along the trail. Also is anyone interested in joining the trail?

From the trail descriptions, it's a moderate trail. If they're accurate and the mileage is ~27, then you may easily finish in 4-5 hours or less.

    Hey George,

I'm thinking of driving up on Saturday (July 30th), and hitting the trail fairly early on Sunday morning (31st). Would be awesome if you could make it, more the merrier, and I would love to see that new front bumper of yours....

Hello Ian, thanks for the suggestion. The vast majority of what little I do know about Poker Flat trail is coming from a similar book, same publisher? "Funtreks", and Chris Well. But I think I have the cliff notes version, mines only 200 pages, but includes ALL of CA. I might need to spring for your version.

I think there are two versions. One which consists of north/south and one that is all of CA. Seems like the newest one is all of CA. But Funtreks is the publisher of both versions.

    What's up Michael,
I'm going salmon fishing on the 31st or I'd be all over this. Have a great time and post some Picts.

We just ran the Poker Flat trail from Downieville to Poker Flat campground. We left Downieville late and took many side trails. Also stopped at a really cool National Forest lookout (for 45 min) and went down a sketchy trail that resulted in a broken valve stem/ tire change. With all that, we made it to the campground in about 4 - 5 hours. La Porte is only 13 miles past that, so it should be doable in one day.

We went north to Sloat, so we didn't run the trail from Poker Flat campground to La Porte. Might want to ask @jAndyMendo since he studied the routes. He won't be back till after the weekend though.

Beautiful area. You'll really enjoy the views.

What he said. You could power through it in a day no problem. If you need road by road directions, let me know. I hunt routes with Gaia and the USFS Raster, and the MVUM's.
