My experiences with LSDs isn't too grand, I've only had experience with Trak-Lok style and Gov Lock LSDs. The trak lok I didn't like too much, the gov lock was too short of an experience for me to obtain a serious opinion. In stock application the gov lock seemed to have done better than the trak lok both on road and off road. But the vehicle with the gov lock had a 3 link rear end so it was hella flexy so I never got in a situation where a tire came off the ground. The trak lok was in a 4 link and if i got one wheel off the ground the LSD wouldnt work and I'd have to use the e-brake to try to get the LSD to engage. Just seems like ABS LSD or whatever you'd like to call it gets rid of a lot of cons of mechanical units whilst getting you the same end result. Of course the only draw back is the brake shoes going out quicker. For me personally it's not a big issue replacing them but I know others are probably paying 300-400 bucks. I would also rather replace brake shoes/drums than to have to take apart an axle, pull the 3rd, take that apart and rebuilt the LSD or to setup the gears on a new LSD carrier.

I would however like to try a torsin style LSD at some point in my life.

True, but the differential housing itself can fail too. Installing a front locker in an IFS is really asking for carnage as this Fourwheeler article explains. http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/transmission-drivetrain/131-0606-front-locking-differentials/
They recommend a helical gear type limited slip like this one. http://www.drivetrainshop.com/Detroit_TrueTrac_p/eat-913a612.htm
Still plenty of opportunity for carnage but if I ever upgrade that would be my plan. Open dif until needed then fully and smoothly locked up.
