Make your dealer/service dept. come get your truck.... and have them bring a fresh one for you to use until they fix it.

Mine works perfectly so far, but I do engage/drive it at least a couple times a month.
You must be completely stopped and in neutral or it may not disengage.
As of last resort, a tow to the stealership is covered under warranty if no mods have been made.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

sorry to hear. but if its any help my 00 tundra ( i know not a taco ) the 4lo and 4hi system works off of the trans fluid when it was low both lights would flash and would not engage or disengage until I added fluid. if your truck is one of the far too many with low fluid it may be the problem. not sure if they changed that in the last 16 years but its something to look into.

I have seen at least 2 other guys who had the same issues and had to take to the dealer, they replaced the switching solenoids I believe.

Pissed me off to no end. Just kept shifting and working it and it finally worked.

OP can you explain process you are using to try and get out of 4lo? Do you ever get a solid 4lo light?

Can you turn truck off, put selector in 4lo, turn truck back on and the light be solid or does it still flash?

The dealer said actuator switch was bad. I can find out more tomorrow when I pick it up.

I don't know why the hell Toyota can't offer a manual shift transfercase in the Tacoma like in the 4runner. There isn't a single manufacturer that doesn't have issues with the electric shift 4x4's. Could be worse, you could have a RAM truck or some other Chrysler product with an electric shift transmission.

I'm wondering how we could manually shift out with a bad actuator??... thinking stuck out in the wilderness wheeling and then not able to get out of LO... that would be a drag.

    Sorry. just saw your post.

Yes mine did the same thing after the first week of ownership...Stuck in 4WD Low.....Actuator was bad....Towed to dealer by Toyota Roadside Assistant....2 weeks later got the part and back in business...Warranty covered it....MUST be in neutral and stopped to put it in Low.....

No amount of back and forth or battery disconnect will pull it out of gear either.

Fortunately I was at home when it locked up.

They just delivered my truck. Actuator was bad not just the switch like they said earlier. Also had the trans flash. What a difference that made as far as around town. Truck actually feels like it has some balls. Thanks again for all that helped!!
