tranny fluid question?

I did a search and didnt find what i wanted. what kind of fluid do u guys use in the second gen 2.7 liter manual transmissions or what would you all reccomend? Also how often do you guys reccomend changing it and whats the actual capacity.... truck has around 60,000 and never been changed

 

i have a second gen 2.7 l 5 lug manual. i just did the transmission fluid change about 2 weeks ago, i used royal purple max gear oil. I think it was

75w 90 im not sure though. You can really use any type of gear oil, the manual transmission has the same type of oil the rear 3rd member uses. The manual book also states how much to use and what type. Any gear oil should be fine as long as its 75w 90 or in that area

 

i called a royal purple rep, and although this stuff is expensve they said it can last 3 times longer than traditional gear oil. I think people change it around 15k, i did mine at 45k for the first time. With this gear oil i prolly wont do it again till around 75k.

 

so how long can we go in the 2TR-FE until we need to change tranny fluid? i just hit 21000 miles..should i change it like every 80,000 or soemthing?

 

I think some people on this site say they change it every 15k. I did my first change at 45k and It def needed it, i changed the transmission and 3rd member oil. Im prolly going to start changing it every 30k intervals or something like that. but this is my .02

I run AMSoil severe gear

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 in the transmission and rear diff. Similar to RP in that it lasts for a long time. 100k normal service or 50k severe service. I usually go with the severe to be on the safe side.

I've read on here that using Redline MT-90 helped the tranny shift smoother, but I haven't tried it. I think I remember reading about it around a year ago.

We swapped Son #2's PreRunner transmission fluid to AMSOIL Severe Gear 85W-90 at 15,000 miles -- as specified in his '08 service manual. Any GL-5 gear lube will work. We've been very satisfied with AMSOIL products for many years.

His OEM fluid was still serviceable but showing some stress: color shading towards black and significant stuff on the drain magnet. He hauls heavy loads of camping gear in dry/dusty conditions on a frequent basis and will continue to use a 15,000-mile interval.

I installed the AMSOIL at 1,000 miles on my new, 2010 Taco. The work was not required for any reason other than it has been my experience that my fuel economy doesn't drop as much during winter when I run synthetics in my transmission and differential.

I will also use a 15,000-mile change interval for gear fluid, not because of miles/severe service but TIME. As an Old Guy, my truck only clocks about 6- or 7,000 miles per year.
